A device cures a UV-curable fluid, such as offset or inkjet printing ink, on a substrate by way of an emitter. The emitter includes at least two flash lamps which are disposed in a row. This provides a cost-efficient way of evenly and homogeneously curing UV-curable printing fluids at low environmental impact. There is also described a printing machine with a device for curing UV-curable printing ink.

A printing machine includes an inkjet printing head having separately controllable nozzles for applying ink to a transported printing material, a radiation drier having radiation sources for generating electromagnetic radiation to at least partly dry and/or cure the applied ink on the transported printing material and at least one light trap disposed between the inkjet printing head and the radiation drier in such a way that the light trap forms a barrier for reflected and/or scattered radiation, thus protecting the inkjet printing head from radiation. The light trap includes at least one channel connected to an aspiration device for aspirating contaminated ambient air through the channel and reducing or preventing contamination of the radiation drier.

A method for operating a UV curing device in a printing machine includes providing a printing material to which a UV-curing fluid or UV printing ink or varnish is applied. The printing material is paper or foil moving in a transport direction and having a width. The fluid is cured by UV radiation emitted by a fluid-cooled first UV LED emitter of the device at least in an effective range thereof. The first UV LED emitter is operated in a curing mode and at a first power, and a fluid-cooled second UV LED emitter is operated in a temperature control mode different than the curing mode and at a second power lower than the first power and different than zero. The second power and the temperature of an LED array of the second UV LED emitter is selected to cause the LED array to be free from condensate.

A method and a device are provided for measuring the contamination of a transparent covering of a plate having LED emitters which are cooled individually or in groups by cooling units. The temperatures of the individual or grouped cooling units are measured and conclusions about contamination are drawn from a comparison of the temperatures with one another. A method, apparatus and print process control strip determine a curing level of printing inks on printing material. Conventional measuring areas of a print process control strip are always formed by tonal value combinations of individual, reliably thoroughly dried, printing inks, in particular when using intermediate dryers. Measuring the measuring areas furnishes no more accurate information with regard to the curing level of ink combinations in the actual printed image which differ from the combinations of the measuring areas of the print process control strip. A level-of-curing control area is provided, which is formed by overprinting preferably at least four printing inks, in each case in full tone, to obtain statements relating to the curing level of the printing inks with the print process control strip. Measuring the level-of-curing control area provides information about the curing level of all printing ink combinations in the printed image.
