Apparatuses are disclosed for providing directional control of bore drilling equipment. In an embodiment, the apparatus includes a hydraulic pump having an input shaft for receiving an input torque from a drill pipe and being connected in use to a drilling head. In addition, the apparatus includes control arrangement for varying the rate of fluid flow through the pump. The control arrangement includes a closed loop oil-filled system including the hydraulic pump and a main valve. Oil from the pump is routed through the main valve before returning to a pump input. In addition, the control arrangement includes an orifice control system which is operable to control the position of the main valve in response to an input signal from a control processor.

Apparatus for providing directional control of bore drilling equipment

A borehole cutting assembly for directional cutting in a borehole, the assembly comprising an input pipe and a cutting head rotatably mounted on the input pipe such that the orientation of the cutting head relative to the input pipe can be altered to determine the direction of cutting of the borehole. A cutting tool and cutting tool motor are mounted on the cutting head to enable the cutting tool to be rotatably driven relative to the cutting head so that when the cutting tool is loaded in use the cutting head is subject to a tool reaction torque that acts to rotate the cutting head to change the orientation of the cutting head. The cutting head is rotatably mounted on the input pipe by a controlled torque coupling comprising a progressive cavity pump having a rotor and a stator each provided with drive formations arranged to define a fluid flow cavity therebetween. Rotation of the rotor relative to the stator forces fluid flow through the cavity to counteract the tool reaction torque. Fluid flow control means is provided to resist the flow of fluid through the cavity in use and thus to control the magnitude of the counteraction generated by the progressive cavity pump to the tool reaction torque.

Borehole cutting assembly for directional cutting

Drilling means for directional drilling in a bore hole comprising a drill pipe and a drilling head, including a slippable clutch device linking the drill pipe and said drilling head such that torque due to rotation of said drill pipe can be controllably applied to said drilling head through at least partial engagement of said clutch, and control means operable to sense an actual orientation angle of said drilling head and compare said actual orientation angle with a required orientation angle adjustably set in said control means and to control said slippable clutch such that when the actual orientation angle and the required orientation angle are the same, the slip torque of the slipping clutch equals the motor reaction torque, so maintaining the orientation angle of the drilling tool at said required orientation angle.

Directional drilling control

A down-hole drilling assembly () and control system () therefor, for directional drilling including a bent housing of a bottom hole assembly (), utilizing a gearbox () to derive a higher speed (about 600 r.p.m.) rotational drive () from the drill string () to drive a drilling bit () via an electromagnetic clutch () controlled by the control system () such that the clutch balances reaction torque when the orientation angle of the bent housing is correct.

The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for use in surveying boreholes. The method of the invention comprises the following steps: providing an instrument package in a leading end of a drillstring, the instrument package comprising first and second single-axis sensors mounted for rotation with the drillstring about the rotational axis of the drillstring, the first sensor being an accelerometer and the second sensor being a magnetic fluxgate or a rate gyro; rotating the drillstring; deriving from the first sensor the inclination angle of the drillstring at the instrument package; and deriving from the second sensor the azimuth angle of the drillstring at the instrument package.

Borehole surveying

The rotational position of a shaft () with respect to a sleeve () is determined by using a sensor () rotating with the shaft () to detect an earth vector such as magnetic or gravitational field, using a coil () on the shaft in conjunction with a plurality of ferromagnetic elements () on the sleeve to monitor relative rotation, and calculating the rotational position from these parameters. Applicable to downhole use, particularly gamma ray measurements.

Detector assemblies and methods

A borehole drilling and survey assembly includes a drill string of magnetic material, a non-magnetic drill collar, and a non-magnetic rotary drilling system including a drill bit. A near-bit survey instrument is located in the rotary drilling system at a fixed distance from the junction of the drill string and the drill collar. A second survey instrument is located in the drill collar at a fixed distance from said junction. The survey instruments measure the local values of the component of the earth's magnetic along the borehole axis, and these values are processed to remove the magnetic effects of the drillstring. The survey instruments optionally also measure gravity vector components to enable borehole heading to be derived.

Surveying of boreholes

Borehole orientation information, typically azimuth and inclination, is derived from measurements of gravitational and magnetic components along a borehole axis (O) and transverse thereto. The transverse components are measured by a fluxgate ( ) and accelerometer ( ) arranged to rotate around the borehole axis (O) at a constant angular velocity (w). The calculations necessary to derive the desired parameters are detailed.

Method and apparatus for determining the orientation of a borehole

A controllable stabilizer (,) in which an outer sub-assembly (,) is rotatably mounted around an inner sub-assembly (,). An annulus (,) is movably mounted around the outer sub-assembly (,) to be radially displaced in a predetermined direction by selective hydraulic energisation of individual pistons (,) in a piston/cylinder array (,). The piston(s) selected to be energised are determined by a directionally-sensitive control system (,). The outer sub-assembly (,) carries a hydraulic pump (,) operated by a driving mechanism (,) carried on the inner sub-assembly (,); this pump (,) provides hydraulic power for the pistons (,). An alternator (,) is similarly mounted and driven to provide on-board electrical power for the control system (,). In use, the annulus (,) functions as a well-bore-contacting stabilizer casing, and the controllable stabilizer (,) provides a directionally controlled deviation to a drillstring (,) so enabling directional drilling, and full control of changes in direction without interruption of drilling.

Controllable stabilizer

A system for controlling the rotation of a roll stabilizable control unit in a steerable rotary drilling assembly comprises an instrument carrier rotatably mounted on a support connected to the drill string. A first rotatable impeller is mounted for rotation by a flow of drilling fluid over the impeller and is coupled to the instrument carrier so as to transmit a torque to it. Sensors carried by the instrument carrier sense the rotational orientation of the instrument carrier and produce a control signal indicative of its rotational orientation, and the torque applied to the instrument carrier by the impeller is controlled, at least partly in response to said signal, so that the instrument carrier can, for example, be roll stabilized if required. A second rotatable impeller is coupled to the instrument carrier for transmitting to it a second torque, which may also be controlled, in the opposite direction to the torque transmitted by the first impeller. The provision of two opposed impellers allows the rotation of the control unit to be controlled over a greater range than is possible with a single impeller.

System and method of controlling rotation of a downhole instrument

A system for maintaining a downhole instrumentation package in a roll stabilised orientation with respect to a drill string comprises an instrument carrier which is mounted within a drill collar for rotation about the longitudinal axis of the collar. An impeller is mounted on the instrument carrier so as to rotate the carrier relatively to the drill collar as a result of the flow of drilling fluid along the drill collar during drilling. The torque transmitted to the instrument carrier is controlled, in response to signals from sensors in the carrier which respond to the rotational orientation of the carrier, and input signals indicating the required roll angle of the carrier, so as to rotate the carrier in the opposite direction to the drill collar and at the same speed, so as to maintain the carrier non-rotating in space and hence roll stabilised. The torque may be controlled by controlling a variable coupling between the impeller and the carrier and/or by controlling a brake between the carrier and the drill collar.

Steerable rotary drilling systems

Borehole surveying methods and apparatus for surveying the true longitudinal magnetic field within a substantially non-magnetic drill collar. A plurality of longitudinal magnetic field measurements are made to provide a longitudinal-position-dependent series of magnetic field measurements BZ(z) which enable the true magnitude of the terrestial magnetic field BZe in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the borehole to be calculated on the basis that BZ(z)=BZe+E(z), where E(z) is the longitudinal-position-dependent longitudinal magnetic field error induced by the magnetism of the drill string and the bottom-hole assembly. Several different methods of calculation are described, including polar and non-polar magnetic error function models. The methods can be extended to a full survey of the borehole heading by contemporaneous measurements of two further magnetic fields in each of two mutually orthogonal axes each also orthogonal to the longitudinal axis, along with contemporaneous gravity vector component measurements in each of these three axes.

Method and apparatus for determining the azimuth of a borehole by

A method of deriving the true magnitude of the terrestial magnetic field in the direction of the longitudinal axis of a borehole at a region of the borehold occupied by an instrumentation package equipped with magnetic vector measuring means for measuring the lateral magnetic vectors Bx and By and further equipped with gravitational vector measuring means for measuring each of the three gravitational vectors Gx, Gy, and Gz. The method comprises the steps of performing said measurements of the magnetic vectors and the gravitational vectors and from said vector measurements solving the equation:

A transmitter comprises an impeller assembly rotatable by a liquid flow, and an electrical generator having a stator and a rotor arranged to be driven by the impeller assembly. The impeller assembly comprises a main impeller portion and a secondary impeller portion angularly displaceable relative to one another about the axis of rotation of the impeller assembly in response to a change in load of the generator so as to vary the pressure drop across the rotating impeller assembly. Thus appropriate variation of the load of the generator may be used to control the impeller assembly in such a manner as to transmit pressure signals within the liquid flow. Such a transmitter is particularly suitable for transmitting measurement data to the surface from a measuring instrument at the end of a drill string within a borehole. Furthermore such a transmitter can be constructed so as to be readily retrievable without requiring withdrawal of the drill string from the borehole.
