A method and system for thermal mitigation in a personal computing device is disclosed. A signal associated with an electronic element in the portable computing device is monitored. A thermal condition indicating excessive heat production is determined in response to the monitored signal. An action to mitigate heat production in the portable computing device may be performed in response to the thermal condition.

Sensorless detection and management of thermal loading in a multi-processor wireless device

Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate throttling transmit power of a WWAN module based upon thermal input. For instance, the thermal input can be a detected temperature, a signal from a computing device associated with the WWAN module, a signal from an alternate technology module (e.g., WiFi module, WiMax module, . . . ) associated with the WWAN module, or the like. A target transmit power of the WWAN module can be reduced (e.g., by a predetermined amount, . . . ) upon occurrence of a condition (e.g., the detected temperature exceeding a threshold, the computing device or the alternate technology module requesting a decrease in thermal power, . . . ), for example. Moreover, negotiation between the WWAN module and a base station can be effectuated to select an appropriate class (power class or Multi Slot Class) and/or operating mode when the target transmit power of the WWAN module is altered.

The method includes determining one or more conditions, wherein each condition is associated with at least one weight, detecting whether an out-of-service event has occurred, and if an out-of-service event is detected: identifying selected conditions and associated weights, and processing the associated weights to determine service acquisition 'on' and 'off' times. In an aspect, an apparatus includes condition logic configured to determine one or more conditions, wherein each condition is associated with at least one weight, and processing logic configured to detect whether an out-of-service event has occurred, and if an out-of-service event is detected, to identify selected conditions and associated weights, and process the associated weights to determine service acquisition &#x201c;on&#x201d; and &#x201c;off&#x201d; times.

Methods and apparatus for out of service processing with varied behaviors

Techniques to support cell reselection from GSM to W-CDMA. A dual-mode terminal determines whether or not the GSM network that it is currently camped on supports Release 99 functionality and hence whether or not the GSM network is capable of broadcasting information for W-CDMA neighbor cells. This determination may be made based on the settings for certain status bits in messages transmitted by the GSM network and/or other information available to the terminal. The terminal can initiate a search for W-CDMA cells if it is deemed that the current GSM network does not support Release 99 functionality. The terminal may also determine the scope of the W-CDMA search and when to perform the W-CDMA search based on information stored by the terminal. The reselection from GSM to W-CDMA may be achieved based on measurements obtained from the W-CDMA search and other pertinent information (e.g., threshold values used to compare the measurements).

Techniques for supporting GSM to W-CDMA reselection

This disclosure is directed to a technique for efficient inter-RAT (Radio Access Technology) cell reselection in a wireless communication system. In general, following an unsuccessful cell reselection attempt, the technique involves upgrading one or more cell selection criteria for the pertinent cell. By upgrading the cell reselection criteria, requirements for reselection of the cell in the future are made more stringent. The technique may promote more efficient cell reselection performance, thereby reducing the frequency of repeated, unsuccessful reselection attempts for the same cell. In this manner, the technique can be effective in reducing power consumption and computational overhead incurred by unsuccessful cell reselection attempts, thereby increasing standby time in a wireless communication device. The technique may be implemented within a wireless communication device that supports two or more RAT types, such as WCDMA and GSM. Accordingly, in some cases, the technique may be implemented within a GSM/WCDMA UE.

Various method and apparatus provides for matching revision levels used by a mobile station ( ) and a base station ( ) for establishing a communication link. The mobile station repeats, for a number of times, the transmission of a request for establishing a communication link between the mobile station and the base station. The mobile station detects failure of establishing the communication link with the first revision level based on repeating the request for the number of times. The mobile station changes the first revision level to the second revision level at the mobile station for establishing the communication link.

Method and apparatus for matching operating revisions of a mobile station and a base station in a wireless data communication system

The mobile telephone system employs a fleet of satellites and a set of gateway ground stations arranged around the globe for handling communications to and from mobile communication units such as mobile telephones. Signals are transmitted between a subscriber unit and the nearest gateway via one or more of the satellites. The gateway is connected to a set of individual service providers such as local telephone systems. The individual service providers may be constrained for various reasons such as contractual or other legal constraints to handle communications only from subscriber units located in certain geographical areas such as within only certain countries or portions of countries. For a mobile communication from a particular subscriber unit, the gateway selects a service provider capable of handling the communication. In one implementation, the selection is based upon the location of the subscriber unit and upon any preferences specified by the subscriber unit. In other implementations, the selection is based on other parameters such as the altitude, speed or velocity of the subscriber unit or the time of day or date upon which the communication is initiated.

Method and apparatus for performing position-and preference-based service selection in a mobile telephone system

A method and apparatus for operating a wireless telecommunication system utilizing code division multiple access (CDMA) over-the-air with a Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) A-interface based network is described. A CDMA radio frequency (RF) signal interface provides a bi-directional interface to a subscriber unit, and a Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications A-interface SS7 transport provides a bi-directional interface with GSM mobile services switching center (MSC). Additionally, a transparent message transport is provided over which signaling messages defined in the GSM A-interface protocol are exchanged between the GSM MSC and a subscriber unit. Other signaling message generating by the GSM MSC and subscriber unit are processed and various actions are taken in response, including the configuration and control of signal processing resources. This configuration and control includes the allocation of vocoding and devocoding resources in accordance with the requested type of service, and the invocation of CDMA based encryption capabilities. Other actions include the allocation of CDMA traffic channel processing resources and selection resources at the start of a signaling exchange between the subscriber unit and the BSS or MSC. These resources process both voice and data calls, and signaling messages, such as registrations, from the subscriber unit. The CDMA traffic channel resources are used to perform the IS-95 style CDMA signal processing functions including modulation and demodulation.

The mobile telephone system employs a fleet of satellites and a set of gateway ground stations arranged around the globe for handling communications to and from mobile communication units such as mobile telephones. Signals are transmitted between a subscriber unit and the nearest gateway via one or more of the satellites. The gateway system is configured to process telephone call connection requests from a mobile subscriber unit based upon the location of the subscriber unit. The system parses telephone numbers received from the subscriber unit based upon the parsing scheme of the locality in which the subscriber unit is located at the time the telephone call is placed. The system also identifies any emergency services numbers called, such as 911, and directs such calls to the nearest emergency services center to the current location of the subscriber unit. In another implementation, the system is configured to perform lawful intercept of telephone calls to or from a mobile subscriber unit based upon the location of the subscriber unit. The system determines whether law enforcement agencies have requested that telephone communications to or from a particular subscriber unit be intercepted and determines whether, based on the current location of the subscriber unit, the telephone communications can be permissibly intercepted. Thus, if the jurisdiction of a law enforcement agency to intercept a call is restricted to certain geographical areas, such a particular country, state or county, the system determines whether the subscriber unit is within that geographical area before performing the requested intercept.

Signals are transmitted between a subscriber unit and the nearest gateway via one or more of the satellites. The gateway system is configured to process telephone call connection requests from a mobile subscriber unit based upon the location of the subscriber unit. The location of the subscriber unit is employed, for example, to determine how telephone numbers are to be parsed and how to properly route emergency telephone calls to the nearest appropriate emergency service centers. Multiple location mapping schemes are employed to facilitate a determination of the location of a subscriber unit and to assist in routing emergency calls. In one implementation, each location with the service area of the system is mapped into a set of uniformly sized and shaped information cells. Each information cell includes pointers to data structures defining, among other things, the service providers that are permitted to process calls to or from that location and the nearest emergency services center. Each location is also mapped into at least one virtual service provider cell which includes service provider preferences and requirements for handling a call to from that location and including a unique location identifier. A specific implementation for use with the Global System for Mobile Communication is described.
