In at least one embodiment, a devolatilization vessel includes a first set of one or more devolatilization plates and a second set of one or more devolatilization plates. A first distributor is above the first set of one or more devolatilization plates and the second set of one or more devolatilization plates. A second distributor is above the second set of one or more devolatilization plates. In at least one embodiment, a process of forming a polymer includes forming a first polymer solution having a first viscosity and forming a second polymer solution having a second viscosity. The process includes flowing the first polymer solution and the second polymer solution to a devolatilization vessel. The process includes removing volatiles from the first polymer solution and the second polymer solution in the devolatilization vessel to form a devolatilized first polymer melt and a devolatilized second polymer melt.

Devolatilization apparatus and process

A durable, flexible, impermeable thermoplastic elastomer composition is produced using a dynamic vulcanization process conducted in a high shear mixer at elevated temperature. The composition comprises cured particles of a first halogenated isobutylene-containing elastomer and particles of a second elastomer having at least one functional group capable of reacting with and grafting to a polyamide, the particles of the first and second elastomers dispersed in a continuous thermoplastic polyamide matrix, said process comprising: (1) dispersing a curative in the halogenated elastomer and forming a pre-compounded, preferably pelletized composition; (2) introducing polyamide resin and optional stabilizers into the mixer and shearing and heating to melt the polyamide and form a mixture; (3) introducing a nylon plasticizer to reduce the viscosity of the polyamide mixture to substantially match that of the pre-compounded elastomer under mixing conditions; (4) introducing pellets of the pre-compounded elastomer into the mixer and initiating dynamic vulcanization of the elastomer and polyamide components; (5) introducing the second elastomer and continuing heating and shearing to disperse the second elastomer and substantially complete dynamic vulcanization; and delivering the thermoplastic elastomer composition from the mixer. Such compositions are particularly useful in applications such as tire innerliners and barrier films or layers.

Efficient mixing process for producing thermoplastic elastomer composition

This invention relates to processes for the preparation of a dynamically vulcanized alloy comprising at least one isobutylene-containing elastomer and at least one thermoplastic resin. More specifically, the processes produce dynamically vulcanized alloys with unique morphological features which have good impermeability and low temperature flexibility.

Process for preparing dynamically vulcanized alloys

The invention provides a method for increasing the viscosity of halogenated (brominated) elastomeric copolymers of a Cto Cisomonoolefin (isobutylene) and a para-alkylstryrene (p-methylstyrene) by mixing the copolymer with a silica or clay particulate filler which has been contacted with an aminosilane containing at least one Cto Calkoxy group and at least one primary, secondary or tertiary amine group. The resulting elastomer compositions are used to prepare thermoplastic elastomer blend compositions, containing more finely dispersed elastomers which results in compositions having improved mechanical properties.

Halogenated isobutylene-based copolymers having enhanced viscosity and thermoplastic compositions thereof

The invention provides a method for increasing the viscosity of C&#x2013;Cisoolefin copolymers including halomethylstyrene derived units by mixing the copolymer with a hindered amine or phosphine of the structure RRRN or RRRP wherein R, Rand Rare preferably lower and higher alkyl groups. The resulting ionically associated, amino or phosphine modified elastomers are used to prepare thermoplastic elastomer blend compositions, including dynamically vulcanized compositions, containing more finely dispersed elastomers which results in compositions having improved mechanical properties.
