A content interpolating web proxy server is configured in a computer network for processing retrieved web content so as to place it in a format suitable for presentation on a particular client device such as, e.g., a computer, personal digital assistant (PDA), wireless telephone or voice browser-equipped device. The server processes a client request generated by a client device to determine a particular client type associated with the client device, retrieves web content identified in the client request, retrieves one or more augmentation files associated with the web content and the particular client type, and alters the retrieved web content in accordance with the one or more augmentation files. The altered web content is then delivered to the client device. The one or more augmentation files may be co-located with the web content at a site remote from the proxy server, such that the content owner need not own, maintain or otherwise control the proxy server.

Content interpolating web proxy server

A web-based voice dialog interface for use in communicating dialog information between a user at a client machine and one or more servers coupled to the client machine via the Internet or other computer network. The interface in an illustrative embodiment includes a web page interpreter for receiving information relating to one or more web pages. The web page interpreter generates a rendering of at least a portion of the information for presentation to a user in an audibly-perceptible format. A grammar processing device utilizes interpreted web page information received from the web page interpreter to generate syntax information and semantic information. A speech recognizer processes received user speech in accordance with the syntax information, and a natural language interpreter processes the resulting recognized speech in accordance with the semantics information to generate output for delivery to a web server in conjunction with a voice dialog which includes the user speech and the rendering of the web page(s). The output may be processed by a common gateway interface (CGI) formatter prior to delivery to a CGI associated with the web server.

Web-based voice dialog interface

A platform for implementing interactive voice response (IVR) applications over the Internet or other type of network includes a speech synthesizer, a grammar generator and a speech recognizer. The speech synthesizer generates speech which characterizes the structure and content of a web page retrieved over the network. The speech is delivered to a user via a telephone or other type of audio interface device. The grammar generator utilizes textual information parsed from the retrieved web page to produce a grammar. The grammar is supplied to the speech recognizer and used to interpret voice commands and other speech input generated by the user. The platform may also include a voice processor which determines which of a number of predefined models best characterized a given retrieved page, such that the process of generating an appropriate verbal description of the page is considerably simplified. The speech synthesizer, grammar generator, speech recognizer and other elements of the IVR platform may be operated by a Internet Service Provider (ISP), thereby allowing the general Internet population to create interactive voice response applications without acquiring their own IVR equipment.

Web-based platform for interactive voice response (IVR)

An adaptive endpointer system and method are used in speech recognition applications, such as telephone-based Internet browsers, to determine barge-in events during the processing of speech. The endpointer system includes a signal energy level estimator for estimating signal levels in speech data; a noise energy level estimator for estimating noise levels in the speech data; and a barge-in detector for increasing a threshold used in comparing the signal levels and the noise levels to detect the barge-in event in the speech data corresponding to a speech prompt during speech recognition.

Handwriting recognition which is invariant with respect to translation, rotation and scale is achieved with a new feature signal, ratio of tangents, and a new application of the normalized curvature feature. Use of these features is optimized by augmenting the ratio of tangents with the sign of local curvature and weighing each feature signal with its relative discriminative power.

Method and apparatus for handwriting recognition using invariant features

An object-oriented dialogue manager is provided which allows a computer system or other dialogue processing system to conduct an efficient dialogue with a human user. In an illustrative embodiment, the dialogue manager processes a set of frames characterizing a subject of the dialogue, where each frame includes one or more properties that describe an object which may be referenced during the dialogue. A weight is assigned to each of the properties represented by the set of frames, such that the assigned weights indicate the relative importance of the corresponding properties. The dialogue manager utilizes the weights to determine which of a number of possible responses the system should generate based on a given user input received during the dialogue. The dialogue manager serves as an interface between the user and an application which is ruining on the system and defines the set of frames. The dialogue manager supplies user requests to the application, and processes the resulting responses received from the application. The dialogue manager uses the property weights to determine, for example, an appropriate question to ask the user in order to resolve ambiguities that may arise in execution of a user request in the application.

Methods and apparatus object-oriented rule-based dialogue management

A processing system which acts as a participant in the collaborative dialogue is first trained using a training algorithm. The training algorithm computes, in conjunction with a current turn of the training dialogue, a task initiative index and a dialogue initiative index for a next turn of the dialogue, using cues observed during the current turn, probability assignments associated with the observed cues, and current values of the task initiative index and the dialogue initiative index. The algorithm then predicts a task initiative holder and a dialogue initiative holder for the next turn of the training dialogue, using the task initiative index and dialogue initiative index computed for the next turn. The probability assignments associated with the observed cues are adjusted if the predicted task and dialogue initiative holders do not agree with corresponding respective actual task and dialogue initiative holders for the next turn. The computing, predicting and adjusting operations are repeated for each of the turns of the training dialogue in order to determine appropriate probability assignments for a given set of cues. The processing system then uses the resulting probability assignments to predict initiative shifts in an actual dialogue in which the system acts as a participant.

Tracking initiative in collaborative dialogue interactions

A method of recognizing speech input selectively creates and maintains grammar representations of the speech input in essentially real time. Speech input frames are received by a speech recognition system. Grammar representations are created for each speech frame and a probability score is derived for the representations indicating the probability of the accuracy of the representations to the speech input. Representations having a probability score below a predetermined threshold are not maintained. Those grammar representations having probability scores above the predetermined threshold are maintained. As more speech frames are received by the system, additional grammar representations are created and the probability scores are updated. When the entire speech input has been received, the chain of grammar representations having the highest probability score is identified as the speech input.

A method of handwriting recognition is provided that combines the efficiency of a point oriented system and the shape information of a segment oriented system in an HMM based handwriting recognition system. The partial segmentation hypotheses obtained using the point oriented features in a conventional Viterbi search are augmented with scores based on segmental shape measurements made on the hypothesized segments. In addition, a method for segmentation of a handwriting sample is accomplished by incorporating a feature to distinguish between continuous and not continuous strokes and influencing the indicated hypothesis score by adding a penalty to the contraindicated hypothesis score.

Each one of the strokes represents a segment of the handwriting sample. The identified strokes are evaluated as a stroke sequence, representative of one or more of the handwriting sample's symbols, to identify the handwriting sample.
