Methods and apparatus for using communications channels corresponding to frequency bands subject to cellular network, e.g., LTE, interference and/or other interference are described. The methods are well suited for use of cable networks where communications over a coax cable or via cable device may be subject to LTE interference. In various embodiments data traffic is classified based on whether the traffic corresponds to a protocol that supports a retry communications mechanism in the event of a communication error, the type of traffic data and/or the priority of the traffic data. In some embodiments data being communicated using a protocol which supports a retry mechanism are routed over channels subject to interference even if, in some cases, the packets correspond to data which has a higher priority or QoS requirements than packets, e.g., best effort packets, which are transmitted using a protocol that does not support a packet retry mechanism.

Methods and apparatus for using bandwidth subject to cellular interference

Techniques disclosed herein include systems and methods for excluding specific application traffic from customer consumption-based data billing counts. This is useful for excluding traffic from consumption totals where the application traffic has been accounted for using other means, such as through billing as a separate or technically distinct service. In practice, a tablet computer (or other end user device) can run a video application that uses a high-speed data network via a cable modem. This video application may be included as part of a core video package associated with a distinct cable television service. The system then provides accurate consumption billing of customer traffic that is outside of any other managed services by creating separate logical data service flows at a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) for excluding specific traffic counts.

A method for operating a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) device comprising storing a data structure correlating a plurality of border gateway protocol (BGP) attribute tags to packet header data, receiving a packet via a network of connected devices, determining a BGP attribute tag of the packet according to packet header data of said packet, determining an action to apply to the packet based on the data structure and the BGP attribute tag, and applying the action to the packet, wherein the action includes routing the packet in accordance with a BGP.

First video material is transmitted from a video source, over a video content network, to consumer premises equipment, via a hub router. The video source has a source address and there is a first path length between the hub router and the video source. Upon occurrence of a first triggering condition, a short route metric is announced from a supplemental video material server coupled to the hub router. The short route metric causes the hub router to perceive a second path length, between the hub router and the supplemental video material server, as shorter than the first path length. The supplemental video material server has a source address identical to the source address of the video source. Thus, the consumer premises equipment obtains supplemental video material from the supplemental video material server instead of first video material from the video source.

A firewall policy is applied to the packets from the at least one internet protocol (IP) address based on the at least one border gateway protocol (BGP) attribute associated with the at least one internet protocol (IP) address. Techniques may be implemented, for example, on a router or on a separate firewall device coupled to a router.

First video material is transmitted from a video source, over a video content network, to consumer premises equipment, via a hub router. The video source has a source address and there is a first path length between the hub router and the video source. The supplemental video material server has a source address identical to the source address of the video source. A replicator is configured to be coupled to a first packet-based network, and a packet analysis module and a router are coupled to the replicator. The router is configured to be coupled to a second packet-based network. The replicator receives packets from the first packet-based network, passes the packets to the router, and passes a copy of the packets to the packet analysis module. The packet analysis module identifies, in a set of customers of the second packet-based network, a top usage subset. The top usage subset includes those of the customers who are using more bandwidth of the second packet-based network than other ones of the customers. The top usage subset includes at least two of the customers. The packet analysis module identifies, at an entry point of the second packet-based network, routes of packets destined for the top usage subset. The router discards a predetermined percentage of the packets destined for the top usage subset. The predetermined percentage is determined in order to reduce bandwidth utilization of the second packet-based network by a desired amount. The predetermined percentage is identical for all of the customers in the top usage subset.
