Polymeric compositions, such as thermoplatic molding compositions, are rendered flame retardant by blending the base polymer with a stable interpolymer prepared by copolymerizing a brominated monovinyl aromatic monomer, a methacrylic acid ester and, optionally, an ethylenically unsaturated nitrile.

Flame retardant polymer with stable polymeric additive

Polymeric compositions, such as thermoplastic molding compositions, are rendered flame retardant by blending the base polymer with a stable interpolymer prepared by copolymerizing a brominated monovinyl aromatic monomer, a methacrylic acid ester and, optionally, an ethylenically unsaturated nitrile.

Flame retardant polymer blend compositions comprise a polycarbonate polymer, an ABS resin, a phosphate ester flame retardant and a terpolymer formed from an aryl brominated monovinylic aromatic monomer, an ethylenically unsaturated nitrile monomer, and an alkyl methacrylate monomer in which the alkyl group has from 1 to 4 carbon atoms. A preferred terpolymer comprises a dibromostyrene-acrylonitrile-methyl methacrylate terpolymer.

Flame retardant blends of polycarbonate, ABS and a terpolymer

An improved method for the production of polyphenylene ethers is disclosed. The method comprises oxidatively coupling monohydric phenols in the presence of a complex catalyst and in a liquid medium which is a solvent for the monomer and catalyst and a non-solvent for the polyphenylene ether. The polyphenylene ether precipitates to form a slurry of particulate solids which is then washed with an aqueous solution of a chelating agent to remove catalyst residue.

Process for preparing polyphenylene ethers

Polymers containing greater than 60 wt% alpha methylstyrene, from 28 to 35 wt% acrylonitrile and from 0 to 7 wt% styrene having excellent color and usefully high molecular weights result from suspension polymerization of the monomer mixture above 90.degree. C. and employing monomer phase to aqueous phase ratios greater than 1:1.5.

Process for preparing alpha-methylstyrene polymers

Thermoplastic copolymers and graft polymers containing from 1 to 15% by weight of a copolymerized salt of an ethylenically unsaturated vinyl sulfonic acid which exhibit improved heat distortion temperature properties while retaining excellent melt processing characteristics, and a method for their preparation.
