A cold gas inflator having an opening device for rupturing a burst disk. The cold gas inflator is filled with stored gas. The cold gas inflator has a burst disk, which prevents the stored gas from exiting the pressure vessel. In the event of a automobile accident, the opening device is actuated, which causes the ignition of pyrotechnic material. This ignition generates a shockwave of sufficient energy to rupture the burst disk. The stored gas flows into the diffuser and then exits the cold gas inflator in the radial direction. In another embodiment, the stored gas exits the cold gas inflator in the axial direction.

A method of folding an air bag consisting of the following steps: providing an air bag with a square configuration; folding four corners of the air bag toward the center of the air bag resulting in a smaller square configuration; repeating said folding step to place the air bag in a smaller square configuration; folding a resulting left corner of the air bag toward the center of the air bag; folding a resulting right corner of the air bag toward the center of the air bag; and pinching lower and upper portions of the air bag while folding the lower and upper portions, respectively, toward the center of the air bag.

Method of folding an air bag

An airbag cover includes a tear seam formed by a groove in the front side of the airbag cover as well as the groove in the back side of the airbag cover. These grooves are separated by a transverse layer. The transverse layer has a length, thickness and angle or orientation with respect to the airbag cover. This length, thickness, and angle vary at different locations along the tear seam. These variations permit control over the speed at which the deployment door opens as well as the order in which different portions of the tear seam tear.
