A method for controlling a calendering system having a first roll having a first roll speed controller and a second roll having a second roll speed controller is disclosed. An exemplary method comprises the steps of: (a) setting the first roll at a desired process speed with the first roll speed controller; (b) determining a target torque of the first roll; (c) contactingly engaging the first and second rolls; (d) determining an actual torque of the first roll; (e) comparing the target torque and the actual torque; and, (f) adjusting a speed of the second roll with the second roll speed controller to maintain the target torque of the first roll according to the comparison of the target torque and the actual torque.

Process for controlling torque in a calendering system

A process for adjusting a property of a web substrate is disclosed. The steps include: (a) providing a nip load profile; (b) providing a calender load profile; (c) providing a desired first physical characteristic of the web substrate; (d) providing a desired second physical characteristic of the convolutely wound product; (e) winding the web substrate to form the convolutely wound product; (f) measuring an actual first physical characteristic of the web substrate; (g) comparing the actual first physical characteristic and the desired first physical characteristic; (h) adjusting the calender load profile according to the comparison of the actual first physical characteristic and the desired first physical characteristic; (i) measuring an actual second physical characteristic of the convolutely wound product; (j) comparing the actual second physical characteristic and the desired second physical characteristic; and, (k) adjusting the nip load profile according to said comparison of the actual second physical characteristic and the desired second physical characteristic.

Process for winding a web substrate

A method for controlling a calendering system having a first roll and a second roll is disclosed. The first roll has a first roll torque controller and a first roll speed controller. An exemplary method comprises the steps of: (a) setting said first roll at a desired process speed with said first roll speed controller; (b) determining a target torque of said first roll; (c) contactingly engaging said first and second rolls; (d) measuring an actual torque of said first roll; (e) comparing said target torque and said actual torque; and, (f) adjusting a speed of said first roll with said first roll torque controller to maintain said target torque of said first roll according to said comparison of said target torque and said actual torque.

A method of controlling tension in a material handling process. An error signal of the process is determined. The velocity analog value of the material is determined and an instantaneous integral gain is then determined according to the velocity analog value. A proportional gain is determined. A first material parameter threshold value is determined. A first material parameter analog value is measured. The output of a controller is then adjusted according to the error signal, the instantaneous integral gain, and the proportional gain. The adjustment of a process output according to the instantaneous integral gain is controlled according to the relative values of the first material parameter threshold value and the first material parameter analog value.

A method of adjusting a process output in a material handling process. The velocity analog value of the material is determined and an instantaneous integral gain is then determined according to the velocity analog value. The output of a controller is then adjusted according to the instantaneous integral gain.

Method of adjusting a process output value

A method of dynamically determining a modulus of elasticity of a moving web material using web tensions and web velocities. The tension and velocity of a moving web are determined in a first span. The tension and velocity of the moving web are also determined for the moving web in a second span. A value analogous to the modulus of elasticity of the moving web may then be determined according to the tension and velocity values for the moving web in the two spans.

A method of dynamically controlling the tension of a moving web material. A web material is transported with an apparatus. A modulus-of-elasticity-analog value is determined for the web material. The modulus-of-elasticity-analog value is used to adjust an instantaneous gain of the web control system. The instantaneous gain is used in the control calculation of the control system. The control calculation is used to control the speed of a web handling drive. Controlling the speed of at least one appropriate web handling drive controls the tension of the web.
