A conductor assembly is provided for an electrical switching apparatus, such as a circuit breaker. The circuit breaker includes a housing having an interior and an exterior. The conductor assembly includes a first conductor member, a second conductor member, and a plurality of fasteners, such as rivets, mechanically fastening and electrically connecting the first conductor member to the second conductor member. The first conductor member is made from a first material, such as copper, and the second conductor member is made from a second different material, such as aluminum.

An arc member is provided for an electrical switching apparatus. The electrical switching apparatus includes an operating mechanism for opening and closing separable contacts, and an arc chute disposed proximate the separable contacts to attract an arc generated thereby. The separable contacts include a stationary contact and a movable contact. The stationary contact has an edge, which is disposed in a plane. The arc member includes an arc element disposed between the stationary contact and the arc chute. The arc element has first and second portions and first and second arc attractors. The first arc attractor extends outwardly from the first portion toward the plane of the edge of the stationary contact to draw the arc from the separable contacts to the arc member. The second arc attractors, which are disposed on the second portion of the arc element, direct the arc into the arc chute.

A remotely controllable circuit breaker includes main contacts, secondary contacts and an arc plate drawing an arc from a fixed main contact when an operating mechanism opens the main contacts. A primary circuit electrically connects the main and secondary contacts between line and load terminals. A solenoid actuator selectively moves the secondary contacts between open and closed states. A magnetic bypass circuit is electrically connected between the arc plate and the load terminal. A movable magnetic armature cooperates with a fixed magnetic armature and is coupled to a movable arm controlled by the actuator. The circuits pass between the magnetic armatures, which respond to short circuit current flowing in the primary circuit and to arcing current flowing in the magnetic bypass circuit, in order to hold the secondary contacts in the closed state during both current conditions.

A circuit breaker includes a housing having an elongated pivot opening, a movable arm, a fixed contact and a movable contact mounted on the arm. The contacts and the arm cooperate to provide closed, pivot and open states. The pivot opening mounts a pivot end of the arm for pivotal and longitudinal movement. A solenoid includes a plunger coupled to the arm. The plunger moves between deactuating and actuating positions to provide the open and closed states, respectively. The plunger has a pivot position between the deactuating and actuating positions. The pivot end moves to a first longitudinal position in the pivot and open states, and moves to a second longitudinal position in the closed state. When the contacts are welded closed, the solenoid provides insufficient force to move the plunger to the deactuating position until after the pivot end moves at least substantially toward the first longitudinal position.

The high transient current sustained by arcing during opening of the main contacts of a miniature circuit breaker is commutated out of the bimetal by deflection of the bimetal in response to the overcurrent to close secondary contacts on the free end of the bimetal and on a low resistance by-pass conductor shunting the bimetal. The by-pass conductor can be extended toward the movable contact arm carrying the movable main contact to commutate some of the overcurrent into the by-pass conductor earlier in the opening sequence to reduce the energy input to the bimetal and reduce the force closing the secondary contacts.

A bypass conductor is provided for use in a miniature type circuit breaker. In one embodiment, the bypass conductor can include an elongated flat strap positioned in a circuit breaker housing. A first end of the bypass conductor is positioned to be adjacent to a contact arm in an open circuit position of the circuit breaker to receive current flow, especially high transient current flow. A second end of the bypass conductor is electrically coupled and/or mechanically connected to a load terminal of the circuit breaker to provide a path for current between the first and second ends. In this manner, the bypass conductor provides an alternate path for electrical current through the circuit breaker. The bi-metallic components and other sensitive elements within the circuit breaker can therefore resist the loss of useful life and other adverse operational effects caused by a high transient current event.

A remotely controllable circuit breaker has a set of secondary contacts in series with the main contacts and which can be opened and closed from a remote location by a magnetically latchable solenoid. A pivotally mounted operating member/indicator member coupled to the plunger of the solenoid by a non-magnetic pin has an extension which projects through an opening in the circuit breaker housing to provide an indication of the open/closed state of the set of secondary contacts and an operator for manually closing them.

A miniature circuit breaker has an arc fault detector and a ground fault detector each with its own test circuit. Test switches for the two test circuits are mounted on a printed circuit board and share a common test contact formed by a flat U-shaped leaf spring. The common test contact is deflected into engagement with another test contact for one or the other of the two test switches by a remotely mounted common test button through a common test actuating member which is moved generally rectilinearly by rocking the common test button.

The stray inductance created by the loop formed by voltage sensing conductors connected to opposite ends of the bimetal in a miniature circuit breaker for determining load current is reduced by joining a voltage sense bar to the free end of the bimetal. The voltage sense bar extends beside the bimetal toward the fixed end of the bimetal where an insulated wire connected to the free end of the sense bar forms a twisted pair with an insulated wire secured to the fixed end of the bimetal.

An electrically insulated turbulator for use in an electrical device for automatically interrupting an overload current is a one-piece molded assembly with an arcuate portion arranged around a terminal screw and a downwardly turned flange for shielding the terminal from the ionized gases in the arc chute. The arcuate portion has several fins and spaced-apart planar portions, both of which are located in the path of the ionized gases. The planar portions have surfaces which cooperate with the fins to create a turbulent flow pattern to decrease the length of the gas flow, and thereby optimize the cooling effect on the gases and for directing the gas flow in a desired direction. The turbulator is preferably made of a gassing material which contributes to the deionizing of the gasses, which lessens the buildup of gas pressure. It also preferably has a blowout membrane in order to limit the back pressure in the device.

A circuit breaker includes a housing having an opening; separable contacts disposed within the housing and moveable between a closed position and an open position; an operating mechanism having a trip position where the separable contacts are tripped open for moving the separable contacts between the closed and open positions; a trip mechanism cooperating with the operating mechanism for tripping the operating mechanism to the trip position; an electromagnetic mechanism cooperating with the trip mechanism for sensing a current flowing between the separable contacts and engaging the trip mechanism with an armature in response to a predetermined current flowing between the separable contacts; and a manual push-to-trip mechanism operatively associated with the opening of the housing and cooperating with the electromagnetic mechanism for engaging the armature thereof, in order to engage the trip mechanism, trip the operating mechanism to the trip position, and trip open the separable contacts.

Rectangular bus bars alternatively engaged in either of a pair of crossed slots in a support block secured in a panel board are locked in place by a locking device incorporated in a cylindrical terminal portion of each bus bar. The locking device includes an expandable ring seated in a circumferential groove in the cylindrical terminal portion. A pair of actuating pins are urged radially outward in diametrically opposed bores to wedge the expandable ring against the support block, by a tapered screw threaded into a central longitudinal bore in the terminal portion of the bus bar.
