Hydrogenated butadiene polymers having terminal functional groups have minimum viscosity at any molecular weight when the 1,2-addition is between 30% and 70% Hydrogenated butadiene polymers having about two terminal hydroxyl groups per molecule have surprisingly lower viscosities at 30% to 70% 1,2-addition than similar polymers having either higher or lower amounts of 1,2-addition. The polymers are useful in making coatings, sealants, binders, and block copolymers with polyesters, polyamides, and polycarbonates.

The present invention is a process for producing an anionic block polymer which comprises optionally anionically polymerizing styrene to form a homopolymer block of polystyrene, anionically polymerizing isoprene to form a hompolymer block of polyisoprene, and anionically copolymerizing styrene and isoprene to form a tapered copolymer block wherein the charge rate of both styrene and isoprene is from 15% to 75% by weight of the total tapered block monomer charge per minute and the weight ratio of the styrene to the isoprene is from 0.5:1 to 1.5:1. The process produces a unique polymer containing a tapered polymer block of styrene and isoprene which has a specific taper structure consisting of small segments of variable size of styrene monomers and isoprene monomers.

In a process for producing hydrogenated block copolymers of conjugated dienes and/or vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons which comprises anionically polymerizing the monomers in an inert hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of an alkali metal initiator whereby a polymer cement is produced, contacting the cement with hydrogen under hydrogenation conditions in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, and then removing the hydrogenation catalyst residue by washing the polymer cement with water or an aqueous acid, the improvement which comprises reducing the viscosity of the polymer cement by polymerizing the block copolymer under conditions such that the vinyl content of the polymer produced in the polymerization step is in the range from 45 to 80 percent by weight.

There is provided a polymeric composition comprising a polyphenylene ether/polystyrene blend and a modifier comprising hydrogenated elastomeric block copolymer having at least two resinous endblocks of polymerized monovinyl aromatic compound and an elastomeric midblock of polymerized conjugated diene, and a polyolefin having a density of less than 0.92 g/cc. Polyphenylene ether/polystyrene blends with improved processability

A polymeric composition is provided comprising a random copolymer polypropylene, a hydrogenated block copolymer comprising at least two polymeric block containing predominately monoalkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon monomer units and at least one block containing a predominately hydrogenated, conjugated diene unit, and an elastic metallocene-based polyolefin. The polymer has improved impact strength and clarity, particularly at low temperatures.

A thermoplastic elastomer composition is provided. The composition comprises a hydrogenated elastomeric block copolymer having at least two resinous endblocks of polymerized monovinyl aromatic compound and an elastomeric midblock of polymerized conjugated diene, a midblock plasticizer, and an ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber grafted with styrene-acrylonitrile.
