Methods and systems are provided for a boosted engine system having an engine arranged to receive boosted air from a variable geometry turbocharger and an electrically powered compressor arranged in parallel with the turbocharger. During temporary high torque demands above a predefined level, the electrically powered compressor may be used to supplement the flow of boosted air from the turbocharger. Additionally, a recirculation circuit around the electrically powered compressor may be provided to build up pressure in the electrically powered compressor before it is connected to the engine so as to minimize fluctuations in engine boost pressure upon start-up of the electrically powered compressor.

A cast exhaust manifold for an engine is disclosed that is fastened to the engine by a number of independent flanges between each pair of which a spacer is positioned to produce an interference fit when the exhaust manifold is at ambient temperature. The use of independent flanges allow the exhaust manifold to expand when heated without creating high levels of internal stress and the spacers prevent undue distortion of the exhaust manifold when the exhaust manifold cools.

A ratchet tensioner is disclosed for a chain enclosed within a casing that does not have a removable cover. The tensioner including a body for mounting on the exterior of the casing, a plunger slidably mounted in the body and urged in use into the interior of the casing to deflect a run of the chain laterally in order to increase tension in the chain. The plunger is formed with ratchet teeth which interact with a pawl that is pivotably mounted on the body to permit movement of the plunger only in the direction to increase chain tension. In the invention, a pin is provided for inhibiting pivoting movement of the pawl during installation of the tensioner, the pin being retractable from outside the casing in order to free the pawl after the tensioner has been mounted on the casing.
