Multi-layer films that are suitable for packaging and having improved sealing properties are disclosed. Some embodiments may also provide a lower minimum sealing temperature. A soft polymer is blended in a core layer and a tie layer comprising the soft polymer and, optionally, another polymer. A sealable layer is provided on the side of the tie layer opposite the core layer. The multi-layer films may be transparent, contain a cavitating agent, or are pigmented to form an opaque film. Also, the multi-layer film may be metallized or coated with a barrier coating.

Multi-layer films having improved sealing properties

The present invention relates to bioriented polyethylene films having high water vapor transmission rates (WVTR) and methods for preparing the same. The film comprises a base layer and skin layers. The base layer comprises highly cavitated polyethylene, such as medium density polyethylene (MDPE) or high density polyethylene (HDPE). The cavitating agent in the base layer may be calcium carbonate. At least one skin layer comprises (i) a copolymer of ethylene and at least one other monomer and (ii) a hydrocarbon resin, such as a cyclopentadiene resin. This copolymer (i) may be an ethylene-propylene copolymer or an ethylene-propylene-butene-1 terpolymer. The film may have unidirectional tear properties in the machine direction. This film is particularly useful for packaging food products, such as pieces of candy.

Multi-layer, white cavitated bioriented polyethylene film with a high water vapor transmission rate

A thermoplastic multi-layer film for forming hermetic seals on packages comprising layer A comprising polyethylene, layer B comprising polypropylene, layer C comprising a copolymer, and an adhesion promoting coating applied to layer C.

Multi-layer hermetically sealable film

Readily castable high density polyethylene (HDPE) films, preferably containing broad molecular weight distribution HDPE resin having treated upper skin layers and untreated lower skin layers, preferably coextruded, on each side, wherein a particulate cross-linked hydrocarbyl-substituted polysiloxane is present in the untreated lower skin layer to reduce coefficient of friction and enhance machinability. The treated upper skin layer is derived from a polymer, e.g., ethylene-propylene-butene-1 terpolymer, and the lower skin layer is derived from a polymer such as ethylene-propylene-butene-1 terpolymer and LDPE compounded with silicone oil.

Oriented HDPE films with skin layers

A film structure comprises a first sealable skin layer (a) of an olefin co- or terpolymer having an external surface which contains a slip/antiblock system. The slip/antiblock system comprises non-migratory particulate crosslinked hydrocarbyl substituted polysiloxane and silica antiblock particles. Layer (a) is located on one side of a core olefinic polymer layer (b). On an opposite side of the core layer (b) there is a second skin layer (c) which is ethylene homopolymer and which is free of the slip/antiblock system, optionally the second skin layer (c) is metallized.

Film structure

A film structure comprises a first outer skin layer (a) of an olefin co- or terpolymer having an external surface which is sealable and machinable, the first skin layer containing a non-migratory particulate crosslinked hydrocarbyl substituted polysiloxane, and which is located on one side of a core olefinic polymer layer (b) on an opposite side of the core layer there is a second skin layer (c) which is ethylene homopolymer and which is free of the particulate crosslinked hydrocarbyl-substituted polysiloxane of the first skin layer, the second skin layer. In one embodiment, for improved barrier properties, the ratio of particle size to thickness of the (a) skin layer ranges from about 1.25 to about 2.5.

A metallized film structure comprises a first outer skin layer (a) of an olefin co- or terpolymer having an external surface which is sealable and machinable, the first skin layer containing a non-migratory particulate crosslinked hydrocarbyl substituted polysiloxane, and which is located on one side of a core olefinic polymer layer (b), on an opposite side of the core layer there is a second outer skin layer (c) which is an ethylene homopolymer which is free of the particulate crosslinked hydrocarbyl-substituted polysiloxane of the first skin layer, the second skin layer having a metal deposited thereon. In one embodiment, for improved barrier properties, the ratio of particle size to thickness of the (a) skin layer ranges from about 1.25 to about 2.5.
