A method of determining parameters for a burnishing operation includes: using a rolling burnishing element to burnish at least two segments on a selected surface of a material sample, the segments having a common width and overlapping each other by a preselected overlap value; measuring the resulting hardness of the surface; and selecting a working overlap value for a subsequent burnishing operation on a workpiece, based on the measured hardness.

A method of reducing crack propagation in an airfoil includes: providing an airfoil having a root spaced apart from a tip, spaced-apart leading and trailing edges, a suction side extending from the leading edge to the trailing edge, and an opposed pressure side extending from the leading edge and the trailing edge, supporting the airfoil against bending loads; and burnishing the airfoil using a burnishing element, so as to create at least one burnished section of residual compressive stress, the at least one burnished section being located adjacent the leading edge and spaced from the leading edge by an offset distance selected so as to avoid deformation of the leading edge.

An apparatus for process control of a burnishing process comprising a body having a first end and a second end, at least one process control coupon, and structure for attaching the process control coupon to the body. At least one edge of the process control coupon is clamped along the entire length thereof during burnishing. A method of process control for burnishing of components comprising selecting at least one process control coupon, selecting an apparatus for holding the process control coupon(s), attaching the process control coupon(s) to the apparatus, selecting a region on the surface of the process control coupon(s) for burnishing, burnishing a patch on the selected region using a burnishing process, and, measuring at least one physical parameter at a selected location of the process control coupon(s) after burnishing.

A hole of a hole size is cut in a composite material workpiece by selecting a milling cutter having an effective cutter size less than the hole size, mounting the composite material workpiece in operable relation to the milling cutter, rotating the milling cutter about an axis of rotation, and advancing the milling cutter longitudinally into the composite material workpiece parallel to the axis of rotation at a rate of longitudinal advance, while laterally moving the milling cutter perpendicular to the axis of rotation to interpolate the hole. The rate of longitudinal advance is controlled such that the hole remains substantially a flat-bottomed hole as it is cut. The composite material workpiece is desirably affixed to a backing fixture with an adhesive material during the cutting of the hole.

A system and method of removing a predetermined amount of material from a bottom portion of a dovetail slot in a gas turbine engine disk, including the steps of configuring a designated flow path through the dovetail slot and providing a flow of abrasive media through the flow path a designated number of cycles so that a substantially uniform amount of material is removed from the dovetail slot bottom portion. The method also includes the step of sealing a pressure surface of the dovetail slot to prevent the abrasive media from flowing thereagainst.

A device for defining a designated flow path through a dovetail slot in a gas turbine engine disk, wherein a longitudinal axis extends through the dovetail slot. The device includes a first portion having a bottom section contoured to form the flow path in conjunction with a surface of a bottom portion of the dovetail slot and a second portion shaped to be removably retained in a pressure surface portion of the dovetail slot.

The nominal configuration of a workpiece is stored in a multiaxis numerically controlled machine. The workpiece is probed in the machine to determine an offset from the nominal configuration. The workpiece is then shifted by the offset to correspond with the nominal configuration. The workpiece is then machined according to the nominal configuration.

Apparatus for performing laser weld repair of complex titanium-base material parts for gas turbine engines. The complex arts, typically compressor blisk airfoil assemblies are enclosed in a local dry box and purged in an inert gas atmosphere. Laser weld repairs are accomplished within this dry box by using a coaxial nozzle and a mixture of helium and argon. The welding is accomplished by maintaining a proper standoff between the weld nozzle and the weld. The welding is monitored and controlled from a remote location using in a video camera system. Copper shielding is provided within the dry box to protect areas adjacent to the weld area from overheating and weld spatter.

Apparatus for laser twist weld of compressor blisks airfoils

A method for repair welding a titanium compressor blisk using laser twist welding. A blisk assembly has damaged portions removed. The surface to be repaired is provided with a predetermined geometry. The portions to be repaired are surrounded by a fixture which contains a laser nozzle. The fixture can provide a protective atmosphere to the area under repair while also shielding adjacent areas from damage resulting form welding. The welding is accomplished using preprogrammed patterns. The welding within the fixture is monitored remotely and is adjusted when stand-off between the weld nozzle and the molten metal are not within a predetermined range.
