A method for producing an experimental output satisfying an objective includes conducting an experimental execution process including applying a selection criterion to select an approach to determining a set of parameters for a set of experiments, and determining a first set of parameters for a first experiment according to the selected approach based on one or more of (i) a predicted relationship between a set of parameters and a characteristic of a corresponding experimental output, (ii) the measured characteristic of a second experimental output from a second experiment executed according to a second set of parameters, (iii) the objective, and (iv) a parameter selection rule. Conducting an experimental execution process includes controlling execution of the first set of experiments according to the first set of parameters, where execution of each first experiment includes conducting the experiment according to the first set of parameters to produce a first experimental output; and measuring the characteristic of the first experimental output. The method includes determining whether the objective is satisfied by the experimental execution process, and, when the objective is not satisfied by the experimental execution process, conducting a subsequent experimental execution process.

The subject matter of this specification generally relates to modular vehicles including separable pod and base units. In some implementations, a computing system installed in a vehicle base identifies a vehicle pod that is detachably connected to a chassis on the vehicle base. In response to identifying that the vehicle pod is detachably connected to the chassis on the vehicle base, a communications link can be established between the computing system installed in the vehicle base and a computing system installed in the vehicle pod. Based on information obtained through the communications link, the computing system installed in the vehicle base can determine a particular configuration of the vehicle pod that is detachably connected to the chassis. The computing system can then verify that the vehicle base can safely transport the vehicle pod while the vehicle pod is detachably connected.

The disclosure provides an apparatus that includes: a stage defining a build plane; a micro light emitting diode (&#x3bc;LED) array including multiple pixels and configured to emit ultraviolet (UV) light towards the build plane; a two-dimensional (2-D) voice coil manipulator mechanically coupled to the &#x3bc;LED array and configured to align the pixels of the &#x3bc;LED array with the build plane; and a control module programmed to cause the &#x3bc;LED array to illuminate a UV curable material at the build plane to form a stack of layers of the three-dimensional object, wherein the apparatus adjusts a UV illumination pattern for the layers of the UV curable material by varying an output intensity of UV light from the pixels of the &#x3bc;LED array and by varying an alignment between the &#x3bc;LED array and the build plane using the 2-D voice coil manipulator.

A method that includes: providing a substrate including a layer of a crystalline material having a first surface; and exposing the first surface to an environment under conditions sufficient to cause epitaxial growth of a layer of a deposition material on the first surface, wherein exposing the first surface to the environment includes illuminating the substrate with light at a first wavelength while causing the epitaxial growth of the layer of the deposition material. The first surface includes one or more discrete growth sites at which an epitaxial growth rate of the quantum confined nanostructure material is larger than areas of the first surface away from the growth sites by an amount sufficient so that the deposition material forms a quantum confined nanostructure at each of the one or more discrete growth sites.

A second virtual model of a second region of the delivery destination may be determined based on sensor data received from one or more sensors on a delivery vehicle. A mapping may be determined between physical features represented in the first virtual model and physical features represented in the second virtual model to determine an overlapping region between the first and second virtual models. A position of the target drop-off spot within the second virtual model may be determined based on the overlapping region. Based on the position of the target drop-off spot within the second virtual model, the delivery vehicle may be navigated to the target drop-off spot to drop off the object.

Methods, systems, and apparatus for performing convolutional computations using an optical system. In some aspects computations for a neural network are performed in a digital domain using electronic circuitry, the neural network including a convolutional layer. Input data for the convolutional layer of the neural network is obtained, and a convolution or correlation computation on the input data in an analog domain using an optical correlator module is performed to generate an optical correlator module output. Based on the optical correlator module output, data is processed through additional layers of the neural network in the digital domain using the electronic circuitry.

The method further includes determining a navigation path for the vehicle to traverse a first segment of the target location based on a plurality of prior navigation paths previously determined for traversal of segments similar to the first segment of the target location. The method also includes determining a confidence level associated with the navigation path. Based on the determined confidence level, the method additionally includes selecting a navigation mode for the vehicle from a plurality of navigation modes corresponding to a plurality of levels of remote assistance. The method further includes causing the vehicle to traverse the first segment of the target location using a level of remote assistance corresponding to the selected navigation mode for the vehicle.

An example system includes a disk that is rotatable and has a plurality of ferromagnetic elements disposed in a radial array on a surface of the disk; and at least one electro-permanent magnet (EPM) mounted adjacent to the disk such that a gap separates the disk from the EPM. Applying an electric pulse to the at least one EPM changes a magnetic state thereof, thereby generating an external magnetic field that traverses the gap between the disk and the EPM and interacts with a ferromagnetic element of the plurality of ferromagnetic elements, and causing a rotational speed of the disk to change as the disk rotates.

Techniques of providing illumination to a head-mounted display (HMD) involve providing off-board illumination apart from the HMD. An off-board illumination unit delivers the illumination to the HMD via optical fibers. The optical fibers are lightweight and do not restrict motion of a user. Because the power source is less restricted, the off-board illumination unit provides flexibility in the hardware used to generate the illumination. For example, the illumination unit may use red, green, and blue narrow-band diode lasers. Further, by controlling modes in the fiber and providing additional light-guiding hardware, the angles at which light strikes LCD pixels may be largely restricted to certain specified angles. Restricted angles of incidence enable the use of fast-switching liquid crystals without degrading the image quality. Such a restriction allows for high-resolution imaging using rapid switching of the liquid crystal which enables very low latencies.
