An improved process for synthesizing acrylic polymers, which is highly controllable to achieve high molecular weight, high conversion rate, and low polydispersity involves continuously introducing initiator(s), acrylic monomer(s), and optionally other monomers capable of polymerizing with the acrylic monomer(s), into a microchannel of a microreactor having an integral micromixer and an integral heat exchanger.

Synthesis of an acrylate polymer in flow reactor

A coating composition including a reinforcing agent. The coating composition may include one or more radiation-curable monofunctional monomers, one or more radiation-curable multifunctional monomers or oligomers, a photoinitiator, and a reinforcing agent. The monofunctional monomers, multifunctional monomers, and multifunctional oligomers may include acrylate groups. The reinforcing agent may be an acrylic co-polymer that includes two or more repeat units. At least one of the repeat units includes chemical groups that enable self-association of the acrylic co-polymer. Self-association of the acrylic co-polymer may improve the tensile strength of coatings formed from the coating compositions.

Optical fiber coating compositions with non-curable reinforcing agents

A low cost composition that cures rapidly and which is suitable for coating an optical fiber comprises at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer; at least one photoinitiator; and at least one non-radiation-curable polar polymer having pendent groups that facilitate low energy chemical bonding, hydrogen bonding, dipolar interactions or other interactions with radical compounds formed during polymerization of the monomer. The non-radiation-curable polar polymer(s) are inexpensive and reduce and/or eliminate the need for expensive urethane acrylate oligomers, without sacrificing properties, and while achieving rapid cure speeds.

Low cost, fast curing optical fiber coatings

An optical fiber ribbon includes a plurality of optical fibers encapsulated within a matrix material, where the optical fiber coating(s) and the matrix material(s), and optionally any ink layers thereon, are characterized by compatible chemical and/or physical properties, whereby the fiber coating and matrix and any ink layers therebetween can be reliably stripped from the optical fibers to afford a suitable strip cleanliness. Novel ink formulations that can be used in the making of such fiber optic ribbons, methods of making such ribbons, and their use are also described.

The present invention relates to optical fiber coating systems capable of providing a high degree of microbend protection to an optical fiber, and an optical fiber coated therewith. According to one embodiment of the invention, an optical fiber coating system includes a primary coating and a secondary coating, wherein when a ribbon having twelve large effective area optical fibers coated with the coating system is subjected to the ribbon optical performance test at a wavelength of 1550 nm, the average change in attenuation is about 0.020 dB/km or less.

The invention includes a composition for an optical fiber coating. An inventive composition includes a non-thiol functional adhesion promoter and less than about 0.5 pph of a strength additive containing a thiol functional group. The invention further includes an optical fiber coated with the inventive composition. A second inventive composition includes a photo-polymerizable composition which contains an adhesion promoter and a non-silicon containing strength additive containing at least about one thiol functional group. A third inventive composition includes a photo-polymerizable composition which has a silane containing adhesion promoter and a strength additive containing at least about one halide functional group. The invention also includes an optical fiber coated with the inventive coating and methods of making an optical fiber including the inventive coating.

Optical fiber coating compositions

A curable composition for coating an optical fiber that includes an aliphatic-aromatic oxyglycidyl(meth)acrylate monomeric component, an aliphatic-(hetero)cyclic oxyglycidyl(meth)acrylate monomeric component, or a combination thereof, and an ethylenically unsaturated urethane or urea oligomeric component. Cured products of the composition and optical fibers that contain cured primary coatings formed from such compositions are also disclosed. The resulting optical fibers and optical fiber ribbons containing them can be used for data transmission in telecommunications systems.

Fast curing primary optical fiber coatings

A method of minimizing localized heating of, or minimizing signal losses across a source of loss in, an optical fiber used in transmission of a high power optical signal at an operating wavelength. These methods include the steps of: providing an optical fiber which comprises either (i) a coating characterized by an absorbance of less than about 4.5 dB/cm at the operating wavelength or (ii) a refractive index lower than the refractive index of a cladding layer of the optical fiber by more than about 3&#xd7;10at the operating wavelength, or (iii) both (i) and (ii); and transmitting a optical signal having a power greater than about 250 mW through the optical fiber, wherein the coating, cladding layer, or combination thereof are selected to minimize localized heating of the optical fiber or to result in a signal loss across a source of loss that is less than about 250 mW at the operating wavelength.

Method of preventing optical fiber failure in high power application

The present invention provides optical fiber coating systems and coated optical fibers. According to one embodiment of the invention, a coated optical fiber includes an optical fiber having a core and a cladding; and a primary coating encapsulating the optical fiber, the primary coating having a Young's modulus of about 5 MPa or less, the primary coating being the cured reaction product of a primary curable composition having a gel time less than about 1.4 seconds at a UV intensity of 3.4 mW/cm.

Coated optical fiber and optical fiber coating system including a fast-gelling primary coating

Fiber optic articles, assemblies, and cables preserve optical performance by using optical waveguides having a core, a cladding, and a coating system according to the present invention. Moreover, the optical articles, assemblies, and cables of the present invention may achieve performance levels that were previously unattainable, for instance, the present invention contemplates acceptable optical performance for wavelengths such as 1625 nm and higher. Additionally, articles, assemblies, and/or cables of the present invention advantageously preserve optical performance, i.e., have relatively low delta attenuation, when subjected to manufacturing processes and/or environmental conditions such as temperature cycling. In other words, the articles, assemblies, and cables can withstand increased stress/strain before having significant attenuation.

Fiber optic articles, assemblies, and cables having optical waveguides

The present invention provides optical fiber coating systems and coated optical fibers having hydrophilic primary coatings. According to one embodiment of the invention, a coated optical fiber includes an optical fiber having a core and a cladding; a hydrophilic primary coating encapsulating the optical fiber, the primary coating having a Young's modulus less than about 2 MPa; and a secondary coating encapsulating the primary coating, wherein the primary coating exhibits substantially no water bubble formation and substantially no delamination when the coated optical fiber is soaked in water at 23&#xb0; C. for 30 days.

Coated optical fiber and optical fiber coating system including a hydrophilic primary coating

The present invention is directed to a radiation curable primary coating composition and an optical fiber with said coating. The primary coating preferably results in excellent mechanical and physical properties, and when coated on optical fibers in a reduction in micro-bending transmission losses over optical fibers with conventional coatings. In one embodiment of this invention, it relates to a coated optical fiber comprising an optical fiber and a radiation cured primary coating wherein the radiation cured primary coating on the optical fiber comprises an oligomer and wherein the oligomer is formed from a reaction comprising a polyol having 'm' hydroxyl functional groups, wherein 'n' hydroxyl groups of said polyol are terminated in forming the oligomer and &#x201c;m&#x201d; is greater than &#x201c;n&#x201d;.
