A method of injecting selected material along a preselected path into charged material. The charged material at least partially obstructs the preselected path. An injection device includes a central barrel through which a carrier stream of a transport gas is directed, and the selected material is introduced into the carrier stream to form a transport stream that exits the central barrel at an output end. The injection device also includes an outer barrel coaxial with the central barrel to define an annular space. An annular shroud stream of a shroud gas exits the annular space at a downstream end. The annular shroud is directed along the preselected path to provide an opening in the scrap steel pieces. Subsequently, the transport stream and the annular shroud stream are directed along the predetermined path to inject the selected material through the opening into the charged material.

Method and system for injecting additional materials into a steelmaking vessel

A stave cooler system for cooling one or more cooling elements mounted in a metallurgical furnace. The system includes a stave cooler assembly having an inner end portion with an end part comprising a body and a number of fins extending from the body, each fin being formed to bend upon engagement of an outer part of each said fin respectively with an outer wall of the cooling element, to securely engage at least the outer part of each fin with an inner borehole wall partially defining the inner part when the end part is inserted into the inner part of the hole.

Stave cooler system and method

A post-combustion lance for directing a gas at least partially therethrough. The post-combustion lance includes a body extending between an upstream end and a downstream end of the lance, the body including upper and lower portions and a post-combustion distributor mounted therebetween. The lance also includes an internal support assembly for supporting the body, the internal support assembly including an internal tube positioned inside the body and at least partially engaged with the lower portion, and at least partially engaged with the upper portion of the body, so that the internal support assembly supports the body both upstream and downstream relative to the distributor. The lance also includes a lower o-ring gland positioned downstream relative to the internal support assembly and an upper o-ring gland positioned upstream relative to the lower o-ring gland.

Post-combustion lance including an internal support assembly

A post-combustion lance for directing a gas at least partially therethrough. The post-combustion lance includes a body having a primary tip from which a first part of the gas exits, upper and lower portions, and a post-combustion distributor mounted between the upper and lower portions and upstream from the primary tip. The distributor includes a number of ports through which a second part of the gas exits the lance. The lance also includes an upper inner tube positioned at least partially upstream from the distributor and an internal support assembly for supporting the body. The internal support assembly includes an internal tube positioned inside the body and coaxial with the body.

Post-combustion lance with internal support

An injector for injecting particulate material into a metallurgical furnace has a first tubular barrel and a housing defining a chamber having an inlet for particulate material, a first gas inlet and a particulate material/gas outlet connected to the rear end of the first barrel. The first air inlet has a first nozzle operable to inject gas into the chamber at a supersonic velocity when gas at suitable pressure is passed through the nozzle. A second tubular barrel surrounds the first barrel in spaced relationship therewith. The second barrel has a second gas inlet adjacent its rear end and a second nozzle adjacent its front end. Gas under pressure supplied to the second gas inlet passes between the barrels and is discharged at supersonic velocity from the front end thereof adjacent gas and entrained particulate material discharged from the first barrel so as to shroud the particulate material.

Injector for injecting particulate material into metallurgical furnaces

A metallurgical lance for introducing gas into a volume of molten material in a furnace includes a head having a bore extending therethrough, a mounting assembly at the head in the bore, and a nozzle detachably secured to the mounting assembly by a connection, the nozzle adapted to coact with a tool releasably engagable with the nozzle to insert and withdraw same from the lance head through the bore without dismantling the nozzle.

Metallurgical lance

A method of processing molten metal by the injection of oxygen through a water cooled supersonic oxygen injection lance. In the first step of the process, oxygen is injected through the injection lance at an initial flowrate to the process which is the optimal flowrate for the lance tip design. Thereafter, at least one process variable relating to the required oxygen flowrate is continuously measured, and oxygen flowrate may be reduced. A second gas flowrate is admixed to the injection lance to maintain the optimal overall gas flowrate to the process while reducing the oxygen flowrate.

A method of removing slag and/or steel build-up from lances in steel making furnaces includes blasting dry ice (solid CO.sub.2) pellets on to a hot lance as it is being drawn out of a furnace. A refractory or ceramic coating may be applied to the lance while it is being inserted into the furnace.

A liquid cooled nozzle for emitting a medium has a housing with a coolant inflow chamber having a first side wall for attachment to a coolant inflow pipe, and a coolant outflow chamber having a second side wall for attachment to a coolant outflow pipe and a base merging with the second side wall. The second wall is spaced from and surrounds the first wall, and the said base is spaced from the coolant inflow chamber and is beneath the coolant inflow chamber. At least two supply ports are provided for conducting the medium through the nozzle, the supply ports being laterally spaced from one another to define a central axis between the ports and extending through the coolant inflow chamber, the coolant outflow chamber and the base. At least one deflector is located between adjacent supply ports and terminates at a central passage extending from the coolant inflow chamber to the coolant outflow chamber. The deflector has an upper surface which is partially twisted to direct liquid coolant passing from the coolant passing from the coolant inflow chamber through the central passage into the coolant outflow chamber away from the central axis, thereby causing a swirling of the liquid coolant in the coolant outflow chamber.
