A digital printing system employing tandem marking engines for duplex printing utilizing a variable dwell time in the output sheet inverter of the first marking engine to provide correct positioning of the leading edge of the inverted sheet for arrival at the entrance of the second marking to avoid the seam in the photoreceptor.

Controlling sheet registration in a digital printing system

Disclosed are embodiments of a modular printing system with one or more modules having one or more bypass paths and comprise a modular printing system with a module (e.g., a stacker or feeder module) having a main compartment and at least one additional compartment. Contained within the main compartment is a main sheet transport path and a functional component (e.g., a sheet stacking device or a sheet feeding device) connected to the main sheet transport path. Contained with the additional compartment is a bypass path. The bypass path allows sheets to be routed through the module in the event of a print media sheet jam in the main sheet transport path. Because the bypass path is contained within a separate compartment, the jam can be cleared from the main compartment without cycling down the printing system, thereby allowing for continued productivity.

Disclosed herein is a xerographic print comprising a substrate with a toner-based image printed thereon, the printed substrate including low surface tension portions having a surface tension of no more than about 22 mN/m at 25 Deg. C. resulting in a surface tension gradient field on the substrate, the printed substrate being coated with a coating comprising at least one surfactant and a film-forming polymer, the coating having a liquid phase surface tension at 25 Deg. C. not exceeding the surface tension of the low surface tension portions of the printed substrate by more than about 2 mN/m, the coating having substantially no pinholes and being sufficiently resistant to permeation by the fuser oil to exhibit an effective absence of haze 24 hours after application. A system and a method of applying a substantially pinhole-free and haze-free coating substantially immediately after print fusing also are disclosed.

Systems, methods, and programs for reducing edge effects, the systems, methods, and programs include inputting an image mask, the image mask defining the location of a boundary to receive a coating , modifying an edge of the image mask to reduced the thickness of the coating at the modified edge; creating a printing plate base on the modified image mask; and using the printing plate to print the coating on a substrate.

A substrate feeding system, and printers that use such feeding systems, that includes a feed roll and a retard roll that form a nip, a nudger roll for advancing a substrate from a substrate stack toward the nip, and an entrance guide between the nudger roll and the nip. The entrance guide has a contact surface that forms an angle of more than 100.degree. with the direction of motion of the substrate. The entrance guide further including a top section over which the substrate moves as it advances into the nip. The entrance guide is beneficially pivotally mounted such that when a retard roll is removed the entrance guide pivots out of the way, and such that when a retard roll is in place the entrance guide moves into position.

A space optimizing toner container for an electrophotographic printing machine. The toner container is generally configured so that it is larger in the horizontal dimension than in the vertical dimension. A pusher member, internal to the container housing is spaced from the discharge opening in the housing. The pusher member is movable, either manually or by a biasing device such as a spring so that the powder toner is moved in a generally horizontal direction as the toner is depleted. The container may have a flexible inner liner which contains the toner particles and allows for the recycling of the container. The described toner container operates without the need for a complex toner transport system while allowing the normally unused space in the horizontal direction from the toner outlet to be utilized.

Space optimizing toner cartridge

A procedure is provided for adjusting for image line skew caused by tolerance accumulation between a Raster Output Scanning (ROS) assembly and a photoreceptor which is being scanned. The ROS housing is adjustably mounted in relation to the photoreceptor, so that incremental adjustments can be made to cause the output scan lines emerging from the ROS housing to be moved in the process or reverse process direction vis-a-vis the photoreceptor. A test print is generated which provides measurable scan delineators to identify the amount of scan line skew created by a photoreceptor misalignment. The measured scan line skew alignment is correlated with adjustments made by a hex head screw to provide a very precise alignment. The effective adjustment range is .+-.4 mm in the process direction which corresponds to .+-.6.3 milliradians of scan line skew.
