A computer implemented method of generating a digital collage layout for a group of digital images is disclosed. A group of digital images is retrieved from a computer accessible memory. A determination is made whether to select the digital collage layout from a stored collection of digital collage layouts or to generate a new set of digital collage layouts and select the digital collage layout from the new set. Based on determination, the digital collage layout is provided from the stored collection or from the new set.

Known good layout

A method of restoring a color image comprised of one or more colorants and which image may have faded over time, which image is represented by an image signal. The method uses both a restoration model and provides a means which enable a user to readily interact with the restoration process to obtain a final restoration. In a second aspect, the restoration model is used in conjunction with a lightness distribution mapping to provide a high quality restoration. The restoration model is a function of a variable time, and is the inverse of a model representing the fade rate of at least one of the colorants as a function of at least a variable time (and preferably also as a function of the other colorants). An apparatus for performing the method is provided. A computer readable medium has computer readable code means which can execute the method in a suitable computer.

Restoration of faded images

A storage and retrieval mechanism for a digital image processing system employs a reduced capacity frame store in the playback device. A plurality of photographic images captured on a photographic recording medium are digitized for processing and subsequent display. Digitized images are stored on a compact disc. When the disc is inserted into a playback device for driving a color TV monitor, the playback device decodes header information representative of image orientation, so that the image will be read from the disc and stored in the reduced capacity frame store for subsequent read out and display in an upright orientation. A memory control mechanism employs a decimation/interpolation operator to interface the imagery data from the disc to the frame store.

Storage and retrieval of digitized photographic images

The K most frequently occurring symbols in an image represented by an alphabet of N symbols are mapped to a set of K codewords. The length of each codeword is an inverse function of the frequency of occurrence of the corresponding symbol in the image and the longest codeword is of length d bits. The remaining N-K symbols are mapped in order of their magnitude to a set of supplementary codewords of a uniform maximum length D bits. The d most significant bits of each supplementary codeword form a prefix which is uniform within each set and specifies whether the corresponding symbol is positive or negative. The remaining or least significant D-d bits of each supplementary codeword comprise a suffix and are mapped in order of bit position to progressively more narrow ranges of symbol values of the remaining N-K symbols.

A thermal printer is disclosed which is particularly suitable for making slide transparencies. The printer includes a laser which provides the necessary thermal energy to effect a transfer of dye from a donor element to a receiver element. A beam from the laser passes through suitable optics and is scanned onto the receiver element by a galvonometer. In order to insure the transfer of dye from the donor at a suitable resolution and with sufficient speed, a relatively high-powered single transverse mode coherent laser is used.
