Squarylium compounds of the formula: ##STR1## wherein Q.sup.1 and Q.sup.2 are each independently a pyrylium, thiopyrylium, selenopyrylium, benzpyrylium, benzthiopyrylium or benzselenopyrylium nucleus, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each independently an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group, can be prepared by reacting a squaric acid derivative of the formula: ##STR2## with a compound of the formula Q.sup.2 CH.sub.2 R.sup.2 in the presence of a base.

Squarylium compounds, and processes and intermediates for the synthesis

A three-dimensional image is produced using an imaging medium having a lenticular screen, the lenticles of the screen dividing the opposed surface of the imaging medium into a plurality of elongate image areas, the imaging medium having on the opposed side thereof a radiation-sensitive layer, the radiation-sensitive layer comprising a color-forming composition adapted to undergo a change of color upon increase in the temperature of the radiation-sensitive layer above a color-forming temperature for a color-forming time. The radiation-sensitive layer is imagewise exposed to actinic radiation which does not pass through the lenticular screen, thereby causing the color-forming composition to undergo its change in color in exposed areas and to form in the radiation-sensitive layer a composite image, the composite image comprising, in each of the image areas, a plurality of image strips extending lengthwise along the image area, each of the image strips containing information from a view of the object, each of the plurality of image strips in one image area containing information from a different view of the object thereby forming a copy of the composite image in the radiation-sensitive layer, so that a three-dimensional orthoscopic image of the object will appear to an observer seeing the composite image in the radiation-sensitive layer through the lenticular screen.

Registration method

A slide blank comprises a support at least part of which is essentially transparent; an imageable layer superposed on one face of the support, the imageable layer not being substantially photosensitive but comprising a color-forming composition, which, upon imagewise exposure to actinic radiation, forms a colored material, thereby forming in the imageable layer an image which can be viewed in transmission; and a protective layer superposed on the imageable layer on the opposed side thereof from the support, at least part of the protective layer being essentially transparent; the support, imageable layer and protective layer being secured together to form a slide blank having a thickness of at least about 0.8 mm, and the thickness of the protective layer being such that no part of the imageable layer containing the color-forming composition is more than about 0.2 mm from one external surface of the slide blank. This slide blank can be imaged to produce a ready-mounted slide.

Slide blank, and process for producing a slide therefrom

A slide blank comprises a support; a mask layer having a substantially transparent central portion and a non-transparent peripheral portion surrounding the central portion; and an imageable layer which is not substantially photosensitive but is imageable to form an image which can be viewed in transmission. The support, mask layer and imageable layer are secured together so that the support and the imageable layer extend across essentially the entire transparent central portion of the mask layer, at least the portion of the support adjacent the central portion of the mask layer being substantially transparent. This slide blank can be imaged to produce a ready-mounted slide.

Apparatus for playing a game comprises a board bearing a two-dimensional grid of fixed playing areas, there being equal number of fixed playing areas of first and second colors; two equal sets of movable playing areas differing in color but having an equal number of movable playing areas therein, each of these movable playing areas being capable of resting upon one of the fixed playing areas; and two equal sets of playing pieces with at least three different types of playing pieces in each set, each playing piece having a first characteristic identifying the set to which it belongs, and a second characteristic identifying the type of playing piece within that set, each playing piece being capable of resting upon one of the fixed playing areas, or upon one of the movable playing areas which is itself resting in a fixed position upon one of the fixed playing areas.

Leuco dyes are provided which comprise the coupling product of a N-acyl substituted aromatic amino color developer and a dye-forming coupler moiety substituted at the coupling carbon with a thermally removable leaving group. Thermal imaging systems employing these leuco dyes have the advantage of reduced bubble formation relative to thermal imaging systems employing prior art leuco dyes containing a group which thermally fragments into one or more gases.

An imaging medium capable of being imaged to form a transparency comprises a substantially transparent support having a thickness of at least about 20 .mu.m, a color-forming layer superposed on the support and comprising a color-forming composition adapted to undergo a change of color upon increase in the temperature of the color-forming layer above a color-forming temperature for a color-forming time; and a bubble-suppressant layer superposed on the color-forming layer and having a thickness of at least about 10 .mu.m. Upon imagewise increase in the temperature of the color-forming layer above the color-forming temperature for the color-forming time, in heated regions the color-forming layer undergoes its change of color but remains essentially free from bubbles, thereby providing an image in which the colored regions are not blackened when viewed in transmission.

4-[3-(benz[b]pyran-4-ylidene)prop-1-enyl]benz[b]pyrylium, 4-[5-(4H-benz[b]pyran-4-ylidene)penta-1,3-dienyl]benz[b]pyrylium and 4-[7-(4H-benz[b]pyran-4-ylidene)hepta-1,3,5-trienyl]benz[b]pyrylium dyes, wherein at least one of the benzpyrylium nuclei carries at its 2-position a substituent in which a non-aromatic carbon atom is bonded directly to the benzpyrylium nucleus, subject to the proviso that if the or each 2-substituent contains an aromatic nucleus, this aromatic nucleus is not conjugated with the benzpyrylium nucleus, are useful as visible and near infra-red absorbers, having high extinction coefficients and a reduced tendency to develop absorptions at shorter wavelengths when dispersed in polymeric media.

Squarylium compounds of the formula: ##STR1## wherein Q.sup.1 and Q.sup.2 are each independently a pyrylium, thiopyrylium, selenopyrylium, benzpyrylium, benzthiopyrylium or benzselenopyrylium nucleus, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each independently an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group, can be prepared by reacting a squaric acid derivative of the formula: ##STR2## with a compound of the formula Q.sup.2 CH.sub.2 R.sup.2 in the presence of a base. The derivatives of Formula II may be prepared by condensing a 2,3,4,4-tetrahalocyclobut-2-en-1-one with a compound of the formula Q.sup.1 CH.sub.2 R.sup.1 in the presence of a base to produce a compound of the formula: ##STR3## wherein Q.sup.1 and R.sup.1 are as defined above, and X represents chlorine or bromine, and hydrolyzing the compound of Formula III. Alternatively, the derivatives of Formula II may be prepared by reacting a diester, monoacid chloride monoester or diacid chloride of squaric acid with a compound of the formula Q.sup.1 CH.sub.2 R.sup.1 in the presence of a base, followed by hydrolysis of the resultant monoacid chloride or monoester derivative of the compound of Formula II to the parent compound.
