Methods and apparatus whereby an optical interferometer is utilized to monitor and provide feedback control to an integrated energetic particle column, to create desired topographies, including the depth, shape and/or roughness of features, at a surface of a specimen. Energetic particle columns can direct energetic species including, ions, photons and/or neutral particles to a surface to create features having in-plane dimensions on the order of 1 micron, and a height or depth on the order of 1 nanometer. Energetic processes can include subtractive processes such as sputtering, ablation, focused ion beam milling and, additive processes, such as energetic beam induced chemical vapor deposition. The integration of interferometric methods with processing by energetic species offers the ability to create desired topographies at surfaces, including planar and curved shapes.

Method and apparatus for creating a topography at a surface

A lithographic method for producing high aspect ratio silica micro-structures having the steps of: providing a carrier substrate with a confinement boundary placed on the carrier substrate; placing the SOG material within the confinement boundary and soft baking at a temperature above its glass transition temperature; forming a pattern of interest on the soft baked SOG material by x-ray lithography; and heating the SOG material until it is substantially converted to a silica-like oxide.

A process for fabricating coils using a Damascene process uses a curved substrate having a surface extending along and about an axis made of a first material. A groove is formed in the curved surface along and around said axis, and the groove is filled with a second material that is different from the first material to form a coil of second material in said first material. Excess second material is then removed from the surface of the first material, leaving the coil of second material in the groove.
