A printer with adhesive capabilities is presented. A printer includes one or more printing elements to image one or two sides of print media. The printer also includes an adhesive element to apply or activate adhesive material on at least one of the two sides of the print media.

Methods of, and apparatus for, two-sided thermal printing comprising direct and/or thermal transfer print means are provided. In one embodiment, a combined direct thermal and thermal transfer printer and related media are disclosed wherein direct thermal printing is provided for on a first media side, and thermal transfer printing is provided on a second media side. In other embodiments, various two-sided thermal transfer printers and media are disclosed wherein thermal transfer printing is provided for on first and second media sides through use of, inter alia, a one- and/or a two-sided thermal transfer ribbon.

There is provided a method for imaging a dual-sided thermal media. The method includes detecting one or more sense marks disposed on the thermal media and controlling activation of one or more of a first print head and a second print head to image a respective one or more of a first side and a second side of the thermal media based on the detection.

A multipurpose printer and techniques for operating the printer are presented. A printer includes first and second print elements. During a first mode of operation for the printer, both the first and second print elements are configured to image both first and second sides of print media passing through the printer. During a second mode of operation, the first print element is prevented from interfacing with at least portions of the first side of the media that include adhesive materials affixed thereto.

Automatic print failure detection and correction are presented. An image is produced on media as it passes through a printer, the image produced by a first print head of the printer. The image is then inspected as it appears on the media for a predefined quality level. When the quality level is unacceptable, remote network notifications can be sent from the printer for proactive maintenance to be performed on the printer. In addition, when the quality level is unacceptable, a copy of the image can be automatically reproduced on an opposite side of the media using a different print head of the printer.

A print media representing a label is constructed having two components. A first component is capable of being thermally imaged on both a front and back side of the print media. The second component is affixed to the first component but capable of being separated there from. Also, the second component includes adhesive material along a portion of its backside to adhere the print media to an object.

There is provided a method for providing a security enabled dual-sided thermal medium, which includes imaging a first side of the thermal medium with a first data security feature, and imaging a second side of the thermal medium with a second data security feature. There is also provided a security enabled dual-sided thermal medium, which includes a first data security feature disposed at a predetermined location of a first side of the thermal medium, and a second data security feature disposed at a predetermined location of a second side of the thermal medium. Additionally, there is provided a system for providing a security enabled dual-sided thermal medium, which includes a dual-sided direct thermal printer adapted to image a first side of the thermal medium with a first data security feature and image a second side of the thermal medium with a second data security feature.

Dual-sided thermal print folding techniques are presented. A dual-sided thermal printer includes a folding mechanism to custom fold a substrate. The substrate is imaged on both sides by the dual-sided thermal printer as it passes through the dual-sided thermal printer and is custom folded by the folding mechanism of the dual-sided thermal printer.

A radio frequency identification enabled dual-sided direct thermal image element and printer therefor are provided. One embodiment includes, a first substrate having an exterior side and an interior side, a radio frequency identification device attached to the interior side of the first substrate, and a second substrate having an exterior side and an interior side, wherein both the first substrate and the second substrate include a thermally sensitive coating on at least the exterior side thereof, and wherein the interior side of the second substrate is attached to the interior side of the first substrate, such that the radio frequency identification device is positioned between the first substrate and second substrate.

There is provided a method to image a dual-sided thermal media including a plurality of contiguous, alternating first and second thermally imageable panels distinguished by one or more associated sense marks, each of the imageable panels including a first and second imageable sides. The method includes determining a starting panel of the alternating first and second thermally imageable panels of the thermal media on which to start imaging one or more received pages of data, determining a starting side of the first and second imageable sides of the starting panel according to number of the one or more received pages of data, advancing the thermal media to the starting panel using at least one of the of the one or more associated sense marks, and imaging the thermal media with the one or more received pages of data starting at the determined starting side of the advanced to determined panel. There are also provided a dual-sided direct thermal printer to image the dual-sided thermal media and the dual-sided thermal media for dual-sided imaging.

Controlled fold document delivery

Imaging elements for dual-sided direct thermal printing are described, generally comprising a substrate and a thermally sensitive coating on each side. Calendering is provided to produce a smoothness of 75 Bekk or greater on each side of the media product. A subcoat or base coat, e.g., of calcium carbonate or clay, may be provided on paper substrates to enhance smoothness of finish and the quality of thermal printing.

A printer with debris control apparatus which minimizes printer fouling. The printer includes a print head for printing on media, a platen having a side for feeding the media along a path past the print head, and debris control member in contact with the media.

In one embodiment there is provided a dual-sided printer including a direct thermal print head positioned proximate to a first platen and an inkjet print head positioned proximate to a second platen. The direct thermal print head is in a substantially opposed relation to the second platen and the inkjet print head is in a substantially opposed relation to the first platen to facilitate thermal printing on a first side of installed media and inkjet printing on a second side of the installed media.
