Method and apparatus for selecting a wireless communication site

A communication device (200) operates in a wide area communication system having a number of sites. The communication device (200) includes a first receiver for receiving communication signals from an active site (120). The information received from the active site (120) includes the location information and the quality of the adjacent sites (102, 104, 106, and 108). The communication device (200) includes a GPS receiver (210) for establishing its own location. The location of adjacent sites along with their quality is ranked to produce a ranking table. A controller (208) is utilized to sense when the signal strength of the communication signals received from the active site (120) falls below a desired level. The communication device (200) switches to a new site on top of the ranking list when this condition of low signal strength is present.

GPS base wide area communication system site selection

A system and method for providing automatic system deregistration for any incorrectly registered radios is described. The system and method further provides for an automatic re-registration request to be sent in order to guarantee that any valid radios that have the same radio identification information in the system as the incorrectly registered radio to become re-registered. By requesting any radio having the same ID to re-register back with the system, a loss of communication to that radio is thereby prevented.

The communication unit (114) receives and determines the signal strength (RSS) of these information signals. A controller (412) monitors changes in the signal strength of the received information signals over time and determines whether the signal strength has fallen below a predetermined level at a rate of change higher than a predetermined rate. Such sharp fall in signal strength is communicated to a circuit which attempts to access a new channel after waiting for a random amount of time.
