Dual mode communication systems and methods

A mixed waveform configuration for wireless communications including a first portion that is modulated according to a single-carrier modulation scheme and a second portion that is modulated according to a multi-carrier modulation scheme. The waveform is specified so that a channel impulse response (CIR) estimate obtainable from the first portion is reusable for acquisition of the second portion. The first portion includes a preamble and header and the second portion typically incorporates the payload.

Mixed waveform configuration for wireless communications

Various packet processing systems and methods are disclosed. One method embodiment, among others, comprises providing a legacy long training symbol (LTS), and inserting subcarriers in the legacy LTS to form an extended LTS (ELTS).

Packet processing systems and methods

A Baseband receiver including a CIR estimate block, gain, phase and timing loops, a CMF, a single-carrier processor and a multi-carrier processor. The CIR estimate block generates an impulse response signal based on a receive signal that is a single-carrier signal or a single-carrier segment of a mixed carrier signal. The single-carrier segment has a spectrum that approximates a multi-carrier spectrum. The gain, phase and timing loops adjust gain, phase, frequency and timing to provide an adjusted receive signal. The CMF filters the adjusted receive signal according to the impulse response signal. The single-carrier processor processes the adjusted and filtered receive signal to resolve a single-carrier segment of a mixed carrier signal. The single-carrier processor detects a mixed carrier mode indication in a single-carrier segment and asserts a start indication. The multi-carrier processor processes a multi-carrier segment of a mixed carrier signal in response to assertion of the start indication.

Single-carrier to multi-carrier wireless architecture

Embodiments of pilot tone processing systems and methods are disclosed. In one embodiment, among others, a pilot tone processing system comprises pilot tone logic configured to receive first pilot tone data corresponding to a first transmit antenna and second pilot tone data corresponding to a second transmit antenna and separate the first pilot tone data from the second pilot tone data.

A carrier tracking circuit includes a first phase adjustment circuit coupled to an input of a delay element and a second phase adjustment circuit coupled to an output of the delay element. A phase correction circuit is coupled to output of the delay element is operable to generate a phase adjustment value based upon a data symbol output from the delay element. The phase correction circuit includes a double phase correction circuit to prevent double application of the same phase adjustment value to a symbol by both the first and second phase adjustment circuits. The carrier tracking circuit may be used in OFDM communications systems with each data symbol being an OFDM symbol and with the delay element being an FFT. The carrier tracker circuit also may include a feed forward circuit for correcting the phase error of a given data symbol using a phase error generated from that symbol.

A technique for admission control of packet flows is disclosed. In one particular exemplary embodiment, the technique may be realized as a method for output power dithering for improved transmitter performance. The method may comprise transmitting a plurality of packets at a first output power, determining a first error rate associated with the transmission of the plurality of packets at the first output power, transmitting the plurality of packets at at least one second output power different from the first output power, determining at least one second error rate associated with the transmission at the at least one second output power, and identifying a desired output power based at least in part on a comparison between the first error rate and the at least one second error rate.

Technique for output power dithering for improved transmitter performance

Embodiments of legacy compatible spatial multiplexing systems and methods are disclosed. One method embodiment, among others, comprises receiving long training symbols and cyclic shifted long training symbols corresponding to legacy preamble portions of packets corresponding to first and second transmit signals, receiving long training symbols and inverted cyclic shifted long training symbols corresponding to spatial multiplexing portions of packets corresponding to first and second transmit signals, and combining the symbols corresponding to the first and second transmit antennas to estimate the respective channels.

Legacy compatible spatial multiplexing systems and methods

Embodiments of cyclic diversity systems and methods are disclosed. One system embodiment, among others, comprises a logic configured to cyclically advance, or perform the periodic equivalent of the same, one or more sections of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) packet relative to the OFDM packet to be transmitted on a first transmit antenna, the packet having the one or more cyclically advanced sections to be transmitted on a second transmit antenna, the duration of the cyclic advance having a duration less than a guard interval.
