IM revision tools include a cutting guide having a coupling (preferably a male dovetail coupling), and a plurality of valgus adapters each having a mating (for example, female dovetail) coupling. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, ten valgus adapters are provided: left and right with offsets of 0 mm, 2 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm, and 8 mm. All but the 0 mm valgus adapters are provided with dual rotational joints which allow a cutting guide to be positioned in both the anterior-posterior direction as well as in the medial-lateral direction. All but the 0 mm valgus adapters are provided with a reverse clock face below the female dovetail coupling. The methods include selecting the appropriate valgus adapter, attaching the valgus adapter to an IM stem and to the cutting guide, and inserting the IM stem into the femoral canal. If 0 mm offset adapter is not chosen, the cutting guide can be orbited 360&deg; to position the cutting guide correctly. When the cutting guide is in position the degree of rotation can be determined by reading the reverse clock face on the valgus adapter. The reverse clock face reading can then be used to adjust the offset of the implant by setting the implant offset to the same setting.

Valgus adapter

An improved asymmetric femoral hip stem component for use in cementless hip replacement procedures is described. The stem comprises a proximal region having a novel three-dimensional configuration to allow for better fit and stability of the stem within the femoral intramedullary canal with minimal removal of strong bone therefrom. The stem further includes a twist isolated in the mid-stem region to improve fit while minimizing enlargement of the femoral canal. A distal end comprising a rotated internal slot is also described, wherein the slot reduces bending stiffness of the stem in both the coronal and sagittal planes.

A machining assembly, including a of the disclosure novel broach design, are disclosed for preparing a femoral medullary cavity for receipt of a femoral prosthetic stem, wherein the configuration of the implantation site allows for the neutral alignment of the prothesis within the medullary cavity for improved rigid fixation of the prosthetic stem therein. Aspects of the inventive machining assembly include a novel broach comprising a proximal lateral recess that allows for initial avoidance of the greater trochanter during implantation, thereby resulting in the preparation of a neutrally aligned cavity with respect to the broach. The machining assembly also includes a guide and a second cutting instrument for removing the bone of the greater trochanter once neutral alignment between the medullary cavity and broach are achieved for the subsequent implantation of a neutrally aligned femoral prosthesis.

A surgical instrument system for preparing the medullary canal of the femur for implanting a prosthetic femoral component includes a template to be used in determining osteotomy position from an x-ray. A gauge is provided to locate and mark this position on the anterior femur. A distal reamer having an elongated drive shaft is used to form the canal to receive the distal stem of the femoral component. A metaphyseal template is used to determine the proper anteversion/retroversion and a chisel is used to cut the lateral area of the femur, both of which are guided by the elongated reamer shaft. A proximal broach also guided by the reamer shaft is used to shape the proximal medullary canal.
