An emulsion stabilizer includes a biopolymer blend of one or more cellulose ether and one or more cross-linked, modified starch wherein one or more of the cellulose ether or the cross-linked, modified starch is hydrophobically modified and wherein the total amount of cellulose ethers in the biopolymer blend is not greater than 50 wt %. The invention further relates to emulsion compositions comprising the emulsion stabilizer, and particularly oil-in-water emulsions. In one embodiment the emulsions are suitable for use in personal care formulations.

Biopolymer blends as emulsion stabilizers

The present invention details the use of starch silicate and starch siliconates in personal care formulations to enhance or provide aesthetic properties to skin care products. These properties can range from smoothness and silky feel to non-greasy and non-oily. These starch derivatives provide an alternative to organically modified starches which can be expensive to prepare and require the addition of inorganic salts to functionalize the reagents.

Modified starches for use in personal care applications

A non-whitening sunscreen formulation for application to wet skin includes a surfactant system and organic UV absorbing materials where surfactant system includes a silicon based surfactant and a nonionic Gemini surfactant. Methods of making the sunscreen formulation are also included.
