A method and system for editing words that have been misrecognized. The system allows a speaker to specify a number of alternative words to be displayed in a correction window by resizing the correction window. The system also displays the words in the correction window in alphabetical order. A preferred system eliminates the possibility, when a misrecognized word is respoken, that the respoken utterance will be again recognized as the same misrecognized word. The system, when operating with a word processor, allows the speaker to specify the amount of speech that is buffered before transferring to the word processor.

A text normalizer normalizes text that is output from a speech recognizer. The normalization of the text produces text that is less awkward and more familiar to recipients of the text. The text may be normalized to include audio content, video content, or combinations of audio and video contents. The text may also be normalized to produce a hypertext document. The text normalization is performed using a context-free grammar. The context-free grammar includes rules that specify how text is to be normalized. The context-free grammar may be organized as a tree that is used to parse text and facilitate normalization. The context-free grammar is extensible and may be readily changed.

A method and system for dynamically selecting words for training a speech recognition system. The speech recognition system models each phoneme using a hidden Markov model and represents each word as a sequence of phonemes. The training system ranks each phoneme for each frame according to the probability that the corresponding codeword will be spoken as part of the phoneme. The training system collects spoken utterances for which the corresponding word is known. The training system then aligns the codewords of each utterance with the phoneme that it is recognized to be part of. The training system then calculates an average rank for each phoneme using the aligned codewords for the aligned frames. Finally, the training system selects words for training that contain phonemes with a low rank.

A speech recognition system is extensible in that new terms may be added to a list of terms that are recognized by the speech recognition system. The speech recognition system provides audio feedback when new terms are added so that a user may hear how the system expects the word to be pronounced. The user may then accept the pronunciation or provide his own pronunciation. The user may also selectively change the pronunciation of words to avoid misrecognitions by the system. The system may provide appropriate user interface elements for enabling a user to change the pronunciation of words. The system may also include intelligence for automatically changing the pronunciation of words used in recognition based upon empirically derived information.

A speech recognition system provides a user with graphical and textual feedback. The textual feedback is displayed in windows but occupies little of the available display space and are displayed only for a short period of time. The graphical feedback is displayed in a designated notification area and does not obscure any other displayed items. The feedback provided by the speech recognition system may indicate a current mode of operation of the speech recognition system as well as a state of processing of audio input by the speech recognition system.

A speech recognition system includes a facility for toggling the state of the speech recognition system solely in response to a user using a pointing input device, such as a mouse. In one embodiment of the present invention, a user designates a predetermined area of a display surface on a video display to be a hot region. When a mouse cursor points to a location within the hot region, the speech recognition system is put in a listening state wherein the speech recognition system is listening for and processing audio input. When the mouse cursor is moved so as to no longer lie within the designated hot region, the state of the speech recognition system is changed back to the state that immediately preceded the listening state. The previous state may be a not listening state where an audio input is not processed by the speech recognition system or a standing-by state wherein only selected audio input is processed by the speech recognition system.

In response, the selected information is retrieved and a new voice command name is received from the user. A new voice command is then created that, when invoked by speaking the new voice command name while a document is being edited, inserts the selected information into the document being edited.

A method and system for creating voice commands using an automatically maintained log of interactions by a user is provided. In a preferred embodiment, a voice command creation facility maintains a log containing indications of interactions performed by the user. When the facility receives an instruction from the user to create a command, the facility displays at least a portion of the log. The facility then receives user input identifying interactions whose indications are displayed in the log that are to be automatically repeated when the created command is invoked, and creates a command that automatically repeats the identified interactions when invoked.

A speech recognition test system comprising a single host processing system having a host processor and a memory device, wherein the memory device contains a plurality of audio files accessible by the host processor. The test system also includes a speech recognition application having a vocabulary, an independent test application, a means for concurrently executing the speech recognition application and the independent test application on the host processor, a means for queuing the audio files as input to the speech recognition application by way of the test application, a means for programming the test application at configuration time to expand the vocabulary of the application being tested and/or other voice gender, volume, and speed playback parameters, and a means for capturing and evaluating test results from the speech recognition application by way of the test application. In an alternative embodiment the speech recognition test system includes an audio input/output device operatively connected to the host processor, and a means for redirecting output from the audio input/output system as input to itself.
