A hermetically-sealed electrical feed-through device includes a conductor, an insulating sleeve, and an outer ferule interconnected in a manner preventing relative rotation therebetween and/or includes a thermocouple in direct contact with the conductor for monitoring temperature. The conductor can have a body section extending along an axis and having an outer contour including flats or an outwardly-extending eccentrically-shaped lobe. The sleeve confronts and covers the body section of the conductor and accommodates and engages the outer contour at the flats or lobe to prevent rotation of the conductor relative to the sleeve, and the outer ferrule sandwiches the insulating sleeve between the outer ferrule and the outer contour of the conductor. The outer ferrule accommodates and engages the sleeve adjacent the outer contour of the conductor at the flats or lobe to prevent rotation of the insulator sleeve relative to the outer ferrule.

Hermetically-sealed feed-through device

A method of making a hermetically-sealed feed-through device includes inserting an elongate conductor or conductors within a hollow portion or portions of a plastic insulator body and inserting the plastic insulator body within a hollow outer jacket to form an assembly. At least one of the conductor or conductors, insulator body, or jacket of the assembly has a plurality of circumferential grooves. Thereafter, the assembly is crimped and/or is swage-crimped at ambient temperature to cause the materials of the conductor or conductors, insulator body, and outer jacket to be displaced or extrude into the grooves thereby creating mechanical interlocks between the conductor or conductors, insulator body, and outer jacket. Additional methods and feed-through devices made by the methods are also disclosed.

Apparatus for analyzing fluid or surfaces within a pipeline or vessel includes a probe positioned to capture or record images through a viewing port of the pipeline/vessel and an illumination assembly arranged to illuminate the fluid/surfaces within the pipeline/vessel adjacent the port with visible, infrared or ultraviolet light of a predetermined wavelength or within a predetermined range of wavelengths. Depending upon the type of fluid, light or radiation of a particular wavelength may be required to capture an image of high contrast and clarity. Accordingly, an electronic controller communicates with the probe and the illumination assembly for automatically controlling operation thereof so that images are captured and recorded of the fluid illuminated with light of different predetermined wavelength or predetermined range of wavelengths. An analyzing unit analyzes the images and identifies an image of greatest level of contrast or clarity and the wavelength or predetermined range of wavelengths of the light used to illuminate the fluid for the image of greatest level of contrast or clarity. A method is also disclosed.

Apparatus and method for analyzing fluids in vessels and pipelines

A method of analyzing bubbles, cells, cell viability, or other particles or agglomerates in a process liquid contained in a vessel is provided. Images of bubbles, cells or other particles in the liquid are obtained in-situ with a vision probe extending through a wall of the vessel. The images are analyzed with image recognition software. The software measures at lease one of bubble, cell or particle size, mean diameter, surface area, flow rate, flow pattern, population distribution, viability, agglomerates or clumping, color change, viscosity, Sauter mean, ratio of surface area of bubbles relative to volume of bubbles, gas hold-up ratio of gas volume to volume of liquid, or interfacial area. The software distinguishes valid or viable bubbles, cells or particles that should be included in an analysis from invalid or non-viable bubbles, cells or particles that should not be included. The software can be configured to provide an analysis of the valid bubbles, cells or particles that fall within pre-set size and shape or viability parameters.

Image recognition and analysis system and software

A remote vision analysis system for a vessel containing a process liquid having gas bubbles or particles floating therein. A probe extends into the vessel and enables in-situ observation of the process liquid, gas bubbles or particles, and/or surfaces within the vessel. The probe has a proximal end that includes a camera for recording still or motion images of the process liquid, gas bubbles or particles, and/or surfaces within the vessel. An elongate distal end of the probe extends within an interior of the vessel and is housed within a hermetically sealed protective shroud having a lens, or window, through which images are recorded by the camera. The probe is modular and includes interchangeable parts.

A portable laser source includes a flash lamp assembly defining a hollow central channel, an elongate laser rod extending within the hollow channel for receiving a flash of light emitted by the surrounding flash lamp assembly, and a hermetically-sealed enclosure housing both the flash lamp assembly and the laser rod and including at least one optical transmission window for transmitting a laser beam emitted by the laser rod. Preferably, the flash lamp assembly is hermetically-sealed from the laser rod within the enclosure to maintain physical and electrical isolation of the laser rod from combustible and electrically conductive components of the flash lamp assembly. The combustible component of the flash lamp assembly can include Zr wool and an accelerant, or like materials for emitting a flash of light. The laser source can include a second window used to test the condition of the laser rod via application of an external test light to activate the laser rod within the sealed enclosure.

Portable laser source

A monitoring system for monitoring a parameter of a hostile environment is provided within the interior of a sealed chamber. The chamber has a wall and an access port extending through the wall to the chamber exterior. The monitoring system includes a flexible, generally tubular, elongated housing having a distal end, a proximal end and a interior. The housing is made of a non-porous, corrosive resistant material. The distal end of the housing includes a sealed window and a sensor, which may be a borescope or camera, for sensing a parameter or for capturing an image within the hostile environment. The proximal end of the housing is sealingly secured to the chamber wall at the port so that the interior of the housing is accessible through the port. The interior of the housing includes a transmission media for transmitting an output signal of the sensor from the distal end of the housing to the proximal end of the housing and through the port. A monitor located outside of the chamber and connected to the transmission media receives and displays a representation of the sensor signal.

Monitoring system for hostile environment

A hermetically sealed fiber optic connector or feed through, the connector for connecting at least two fiber optic cables and including a center member having two extensions, with each of the extensions being cylindrical and coaxial. Each of the extensions includes a first engagement means and a first sealing means, with the center member defining a channel axially disposed relative to the extensions. A first connector includes a backshell, with the backshell including a second engagement means in complementary relationship with the first engagement means of a first one of the extensions, and a second sealing means in complimentary relationship with the first sealing means of the first one of the extensions. The first connector includes a ferrule seat and a ferrule joined to the ferrule seat, and includes a cylindrical crimp socket joined to the ferrule seat. The crimp socket defines an axial channel for receiving a first fiber optic cable. The ferrule seat defines a bore placing the ferrule in communication with the axial channel. The bore receives the optical fiber of the first fiber optic cable and places the ferrule in optical communication with the first optical fiber. The feed through of the present invention seals onto a fiber optic cable.

Hermetically sealed connectors and feed-throughs for fiber optic cables and method for effecting hermetic seals for such cables

An endoscope contains no adhesives, epoxies, or other organic materials. The endoscope includes a set of lenses held in position by cylindrical spacers. A pair of windows seal the ends of the endoscope, and prevent the lenses and spacers from falling out. The windows are brazed to the endoscope. Due to the use of brazing, no adhesives are needed to hold the lenses or windows in place. Thus, one can sterilize the endoscope in the high temperature environment of an autoclave, without risking damage to the optical components. The brazing produces a hermetic seal which enables the endoscope to function properly in an environment of high temperature or high pressure, or in chemically abusive environments.

Endoscope

The present device is a light transmission probe which is designed to transmit light through a fluid, which is held by a tank or in a pipe or the like. By analyzing the change in amplitude and/or frequency of the light transmitted, certain parameters of the fluid can be determined. The present light transmission probe, in a preferred embodiment, includes a sapphire rod or window as the light conducting medium. Further, in a preferred embodiment, the sapphire rod has a layer of titanium molymanganese metallized to its lengthwise surface and the metallized larger is fused to the inside cylindrical aperture of a stainless steel housing. The combination just described provides a probe which does not react to the presence of chemicals normally used in the chemical industry and can withstand relatively high pressures and relatively high temperatures.

Probe for transmitting light through a fluid

The feedthrough device includes first and second half housing members, each of which has an internal chamber. The feedthrough device further includes a removable header member that fits within the chambers of the first and second half housing members when they are threaded together. The first half housing member has a threaded protrusion which fits into a threaded aperture located in the wall of a sealed structure, such as the wall of a vacuum furnace. The threaded protrusion arrangement includes a first 'O' ring which seals the periphery of the aperture in the wall of the sealed structure. The header has first connectable terminals on one end and second connectable terminals on the other end. In between the first and second connectable terminals of the header there is located a plate member which fits along the edge of the first half housing member chamber; and located between that edge and the plate is a second 'O' ring. Wires connecting the first and second terminals pass through the plate member in a sealed arrangement. The second half housing member has an abutting structure located at the end of its chamber so that when the second half housing member threads with the first housing member, the plate is pushed by the abutting structure to squeeze the second 'O' ring to complete a seal of the first half housing member chamber. Accordingly, the first connectors are sealed against the outside world, but are connected to the circuitry within and outside of the sealed structure.
