A display with improved visual uniformity, comprised of an array of independently-addressable light-emitting elements, including at least a first independently-addressable light-emitting element for producing a first color of light and a second independently-addressable light-emitting element for producing a second color of light; wherein at least the first independently-addressable light-emitting element is subdivided into at least two spatially separated commonly-addressed light-emitting areas and wherein at least a portion of the second independently-addressable light-emitting element is positioned between the spatially separated commonly-addressed light-emitting areas of the first independently-addressable light-emitting element.

A full-color display system having improved apparent resolution comprising: a display formed from an array of full-color groups of light-emitting elements each comprising more than one luma-chroma sub-group of light-emitting elements; and a processor for receiving a full color input image signal that specifies full color image values at each of a two-dimensional number of sampled addressable spatial locations within an image to be displayed, for providing a full color image signal with image signal values corresponding to the spatial location of each luma-chroma sub-group, for computing a control signal representing the relative values, or difference between values, for the image signal values corresponding to each luma-chroma sub-group and at least one of each luma-chroma sub-group's neighbors, and for rendering a signal for driving each light-emitting element within each luma-chroma sub-group of light-emitting elements as a function of the values for the image signal corresponding to each luma-chroma sub-group and the control signal.

Color display system with improved apparent resolution

An active matrix electro-luminescent display system, comprising: a display composed of an array of regions of light-emitting elements, pixel driving circuits for independently controlling the current to each light-emitting element, one or more display drivers for receiving an input image signal for data to drive the pixel driving circuits and generating a converted image signal for driving the light emitting elements in each region of the display through signals provided through data lines and select lines, wherein the one or more display drivers sequentially receive the input image signal for driving the light emitting elements within each region of the array of regions, analyzes the input image signal received for each region to estimate the current that would result at, at least, one point along at least one power line providing current to each region, if employed without further modification, based upon device architecture and material and performance characteristics of device components, and sequentially generates a converted image signal for driving the light emitting elements in each region as a function of the input image signal and the estimated currents.

Electro-luminescent display with power line voltage compensation

An electroluminescent display system, comprising: a) a display composed of an array of regions, wherein the current to each of the regions is provided by a pair of power lines and wherein each region includes an array of light emitting elements for emitting light; b) a pixel driving circuit for independently controlling the current to each light-emitting element in response to an image signal, wherein the intensity of the light output by the light emitting elements is dependent upon the current provided to each light emitting element; and c) a display driver for receiving an input image signal and generating a converted image signal for driving the light emitting elements in the display, wherein the display driver analyzes the input image signal to estimate the current that would result at, at least, one point along at least one of the power lines providing current to each of the regions, if employed without further modification, based upon device architecture and material and performance characteristics of device components, and generates the converted image signal as a function of the input image signal and the estimated currents.

OLED display with improved power performance

A color display device, comprising: an array of subpixels of at least four different colors, including at least two relatively higher luminous color subpixels and at least two relatively lower luminous color subpixels, wherein the subpixels are arranged into groups forming at least two distinct types of pixels, each pixel type including the two relatively higher luminous color subpixels and at least one of the two relatively lower luminous color subpixels, and wherein the pixel types are arranged in a pattern such that the relative locations of the two relatively higher luminous color subpixels in each pixel is repeated in adjacent pixels, and the relative location of at least one of the two relatively lower luminance color subpixels is not repeated in at least one adjacent pixel. Various embodiments of the invention enable color display devices with improved image display quality, with both the appearance of jagged lines and the appearance of banding reduced simultaneously.

Color display device with enhanced pixel pattern

An OLED display system includes a) an OLED display including an array of light emitting pixels, each pixel having a plurality of OLEDs for emitting different colors of light specifying a gamut wherein one of the OLEDs has a power efficiency or lifetime different from the power efficiency or lifetime of at least one of the other OLEDs; b) a control signal; and c) a display driver for receiving a color display signal representing a relative luminance and color to be produced for each pixel of the display and generating a converted color display signal for driving the OLEDs in the display, wherein the display driver is responsive to the control signal for controlling the color gamut saturation of light produced by the OLEDs to reduce power consumption or increase lifetime of at least one of the OLEDs.

Four color digital cinema system with extended color gamut and copy protection

An OLED display device includes: an array of light emitting pixels, each pixel having red, green, and blue OLEDs and at least one additional colored OLED that expands the gamut of the display device relative to the gamut defined by the red, green and blue OLEDs, wherein the luminance efficiency or the luminance stability over time of the additional OLED is higher than the luminance efficiency or the luminance stability over time of at least one of the red, green, and blue OLEDs; and means for selectively driving the OLEDs with a drive signal to reduce overall power usage or extend the lifetime of the display while maintaining display color accuracy. In accordance with various embodiments, the present invention provides a color display device with improved power efficiency, longer overall lifetime, expanded color gamut with accurate hues, and improved spatial image quality.

Color OLED display with improved power efficiency

An OLED display device includes an array of light emitting pixels, each pixel having three or more OLEDs for emitting different colors of light specifying a gamut and at least one additional OLED for emitting a color of light within the gamut, wherein the power efficiency of the additional OLED is higher than the luminance efficiency of at least one of the three or more OLEDs; and means for driving the OLEDs in the pixels to produce a given color and luminance at a reduced power usage.

A color OLED display includes an array of light emitting pixels, each pixel having three light emitting elements for emitting red, green, and blue colors of light specifying a gamut and at least one additional element for emitting a color of light within the gamut and wherein the power efficiency of the additional element is higher than the power efficiency of at least one of the red, green, and blue elements; and wherein the light emitting elements in the pixel are arranged in a two-by-two array having the green light emitting element and the additional element diagonally opposed to each other at two opposite corners of the two-by-two array and having the red and blue light emitting elements diagonally opposed to each other at the other two opposite corners of the two-by-two array, and wherein the additional element is larger than at least one of the red, green or blue light emitting elements.

An OLED display system includes an OLED display including an array of light emitting pixels, each pixel having a plurality of OLEDs for emitting different colors of light specifying a gamut and including at least one additional OLED within the gamut defined by the other OLEDs and wherein one of the OLEDs has a power efficiency or lifetime different from the power efficiency or lifetime of at least one of the other OLEDs; a control signal; and a display driver for receiving a color display signal representing a relative luminance and color to be produced for each pixel of the display and generating a converted color display signal for driving the OLEDs in the display at the relative luminance and color, wherein the display driver is responsive to the control signal for controlling the in-gamut mixing ratio of the OLEDs to reduce power consumption or increase lifetime of at least one of the OLEDs.

A method of making an improved color OLED display device, includes the steps of: identifying a plurality of different OLED materials having differing chromaticity coordinates, luminance stability over time, and luminance efficiency; calculating an estimate of display lifetime for a plurality of combinations of the different OLED materials used to produce a pixel having a white point with a defined chromaticity coordinate and luminance; and selecting the combination having the maximum lifetime.
