Method and apparatus for molding an IOL comprising first and second mold halves each having an optic forming surface and haptic forming surfaces which together define a mold cavity in the shape of the IOL to be molded therein when the mold halves are assembled together. An injection port is formed and connects to one of said haptic forming surfaces or the optic forming surface wherethrough a polymerizable material is injected into the mold cavity. A venting port is formed and connects to another haptic wherethrough air escapes from the mold cavity as the polymerizable material is injected through the injection port.

The present invention provides an optically clear, hydrophilic coating upon the surface of a silicone hydrogel lens by subjecting the surface of the lens to a process comprising plasma treatment, hydration, and heat sterilization that is controlled to result in a silicate-containing film having a mosaic pattern of projecting plates surrounded by fissures when viewing a 50&times;50 micron square AFM image, wherein the peak-to-valley distances of the fissures are on average between about 100 and 500 angstr&ouml;ms and the plate coverage is on average between about 40% to 99%.

Plasma surface treatment of silicone hydrogel contact lenses

An apparatus and method for inverting a plurality of contact lenses between separate processing steps which treat the opposite concave and convex surfaces of the lenses. The lenses are initially placed convex side-up on a perforated lens support surface and are subjected to the first processing step which treats this surface of the lens. The support surface is then passed over an elongated air stream which traverses and is directed to impinge upon the bottom surface of the support whereby the air stream passes through the perforations in the support and inverts the lenses from the convex side-up position to a concave side-up position whereupon this surface of the lenses may be treated in a subsequent processing step.
