Described herein are resinous compositions comprising a particular cycloaliphatic epoxy resin and the adduct of these epoxy resins with an aromatic active hydrogen-containing compound. These compositions afford unreinforced castings with higher heat deflection temperatures, faster cure rates, and reduced water uptake than similar compositions containing epoxy adducts made from aliphatic polyols.

High modulus epoxy resin systems

Impact resistant matrix resins for advanced composites

Prosthetic devices, such as orthopedic, dental and maxillofacial prostheses, are provided which are composed of an inner load bearing, functional component and an outer foamed or sintered porous coating of selected bioengineering thermoplastics. The bioengineering thermoplastic coating is provided in regions where long-term bone fixation is desired by tissue ingrowth. The coatings offer substantial biomechanical advantages over any material system previously reported. Also provided, are anatomically shaped devices comprised totally of bioengineering thermoplastics with select porous areas; these devices include bone gap bridges, bone caps, and alveolar ridge augmentation implants.

Prosthetic devices having coatings of selected porous bioengineering

Composites comprising structural fibers such as carbon fibers and, as the matrix resin, an aryl ether sulfone polymer comprising a 4,4'-bis-phenylsulfonyl biphenyl and at least two additional arylene structural units. The matrix resins exhibit improved toughness and stress crack resistance and a reduced tendency toward crystallization. The polymers are soluble and film-forming from solution, and may be used as coating and impregnating resins for producing the laminates and fiber-reinforced composites of this invention.

Coated Prosthetic devices useful in the medical and dental fields, such as dental implants, intramedullary nails, and total hip prostheses, are provided having a porosity or density gradient in the sintered plastic coating. The higher porosity is at the outer surface which facilitates bone ingrowth while the lesser porosity which has a higher density and a more continuous plastic layer is on the inner surface and thus provides better adhesion to the load bearing component.
