Examples are described of marking specified regions of stored image frame buffer data in an image frame buffer. An imaging system can read the specified regions of the image frame buffer to identify whether the marking has been overwritten or not. The imaging system can thus efficiently identify how much of the image frame buffer has been overwritten with data from a new image frame. Based on this, the imaging system can retrieve partial image frame data from the image frame buffer and can process the partial image frame data, for instance to composite the partial image frame data with virtual content and/or to perform distortion compensation. The processed partial image frame data can be uploaded to a display buffer and displayed by a display, either as-is or once more of the frame is captured and processed. The imaging system can also perform auto-exposure using the partial image frame data.

A consumption metric for the consumable items is determined based on the identification and quantity data. Consumption-related information is provided based on the consumption metric. Consumption-related information may be used for a number of purposes, including for providing aggregate consumption information to suppliers, and health advice and recipes to users, for example.

Various embodiments include methods and systems provide a distributed settings registry with access protection definable by application developers. Distributed settings registry may be implemented across different technologies with customizable privileges and the dynamic ability to plug different nodes into the registry tree. The settings registry may exist under a registry interface so the applications invoking the registry need not be concerned with where or how the settings data is stored. Each node in the tree of the registry may define its own privilege requirements and storage technology. Nodes may be 'native' (i.e., fully supported within the setting registry system software) or 'non-native' (i.e., defined by developers for specific applications).
