Methods and systems for collection of blood components, such as plasma, from donors are provided. One method includes the steps of collecting a unit of whole blood from a donor; forcing the collected blood unit through a plasma separator; accumulating the plasma in a container; and returning concentrated cells to the donor. One system includes a disposable blood collection set and a reusable fixture into which the collection set can be mounted. The fixture is operated by a self-contained energy source, requiring no exterior electrical connection or other external source of energy.

A material is formed into hollow fiber form, and the surface characteristics of the interior bore is selectively modified in a predetermined fashion by a reactive lumen fluid. Nucleophilic materials, such as regenerated cellulose, can be formed into hollow fibers and simultaneously modified to improve their biocompatibility in accordance with the invention.

A system for generating substantially constant fluid pressure is provided for forcing fluid from a variable volume container. The system includes a roller that rotates in response to a constant applied torque to force fluid from the flexible container under a substantially constant pressure. Two spaced apart parallel rollers can exert force on both sides of the container.

A straight-forward, simplified process and apparatus for obtaining blood plasma are provided which employ no pumps or other external flow monitoring devices. Instead, a plasma filtering assembly is suspended a predetermined distance below the injection site to employ the forces of gravity to separate plasma from the other components of whole blood.
