During normal operation of diesel engines the EGR valve poppet often becomes stuck to the valve seat in the closed position, due to excessive build up of exhaust gas debris, which renders the valve inoperable. This usually occurs after the engine is shut down and the valve is seated. Features, which locate the valve poppet in an unseated position when not in use, are implemented into the EGR valve design to prevent this sticking from occurring, thereby increasing product robustness and prolonging product life.

An electronic throttle control system is described. The system includes a non-contacting sensor stator integrated into an electronic throttle body and is aligned to the sensor rotor attached to the shaft to properly set sensor air gap by assembly aids or by close fit to the throttle body. A motor and vehicle connector is electrically connected to the sensor stator but is allowed to be positioned separately from the sensor stator by means of a flexible interconnect.

Assembly with non-contacting position sensor

The present invention is directed to an exhaust gas recirculation valve incorporating a DC motor and a dual poppet valve assembly. A motor is contained inside of the actuator housing. The motor has a rotatable motor shaft with a first gear connected to the end of the motor shaft. A second gear is engageable to the first gear and is configured to rotate in response to the movement of the first gear and the motor shaft. The second gear is also connected to a pin member disposed through the top portion of a shaft member that has two poppet valves disposed on to the shaft. The two ends of the pin member are slidably engageable to either an upwardly or downwardly sloped ramp portion. When the second gear rotates the shaft rotates and moves upward or downward to cause the valve members to move between an open and closed position.

Gaseous fluid metering valve

A fail-safe throttle positioning device is disclosed for an engine induction system. A throttle body is provided having a fluid passage. A movable throttle valve is disposed within the fluid passage for at least idle speed control. An actuator mechanism is connected to the throttle valve for operably moving the throttle valve between a minimum fluid flow position and a maximum fluid flow position. A fail-safe mechanism urges the throttle valve toward an intermediate position between the minimum and maximum fluid flow positions to prevent inoperability of the engine during failure of the actuator mechanism.

Fail safe throttle positioning system

A method of pressure balancing across a bearing adjacent to a pressure differential is described. The method primarily includes providing a bypass port around the bearing for allowing a fluid flow from a first pressure side to a second pressure side. A throttle body for an engine is also described. The throttle body primarily includes: (1) a bearing cooperating with the valve body; and (2) a bypass port around the bearing for allowing the fluid flow from a first pressure side to a second pressure side.

Pressure balanced bearing

A control system having a housing with a bore formed within the housing. A valve member is associated with the bore for controlling the passage of a fluid medium through the bore. An induction sensor is aligned with the valve and facilitates determining the valve position. An inductor is connected to an end of the valve member that is in close proximity to the induction sensor. It is contemplated that this control system can be used in a number of different applications including throttle control systems, turbo actuators, canister purge systems and shift control mechanisms. However, it is within the scope of this invention to incorporate the control system on virtually any type of vehicle system where it is possible to determine the position of a valve utilizing induction sensor technology.

Position sensor apparatus and method

An electric fluid pump for a transmission, transfer case or an oil reservoir. The pump is contained within the transmission, transfer case or engine oil reservoir and has an open housing which allows fluid into the motor for cooling and lubrication.

An electric positional actuator that includes a default device for positioning the actuated device in a default position. The actuator includes an electric motor that controls the rotational position of a shaft through a gear system. When the shaft rotates, it moves a link-bar that actuates the actuated device. A rotational sensor coupled to a printed circuit board detects the position of the shaft, and provide a feedback signal of the shaft's position. The default device includes a spring wrapped around the shaft. When the link bar is rotated away from its default position, one leg of the spring remains in contact with a housing spring boss while the other leg of the spring is in contact with the link bar opposing the movement and trying to return the link-bar to the default position.

Electric positional actuator

The subject invention is a throttle body for an intake manifold of a spark ignition internal combustion engine. The throttle body includes a throttle plate member comprising a shaft, a throttle plate and a lever. The throttle plate member is integrally molded as one piece from an engineering resin. The throttle body also includes an air intake portion and an air discharge portion. Either the air intake or the air discharge portions may be integrally attached to the intake manifold prior to assembly of the throttle plate member.

An injection molded throttle body having a one-piece lever shaft and plate which is installed as a single piece unit in a laterally split throttle body housing.

A three plenum air distribution manifold for intake air to internal combustion engine with long, narrow runners leading from first and second spaced side plenums for delivery of air and recirculating exhaust gases into corresponding combustion chambers of the engine. One end of the spaced side plenums are connected by an acoustically balanced cross over passage selectively closed by a manifold tuning valve for improving engine output torque during low engine speed. A third plenum is positioned intermediate the two side plenums to communicate with the combustion chambers in bypass relation to the side plenums thereby directly supplying air to the combustion chambers through short runners which are selectively opened by valves to optimize engine torque over a higher range of engine speeds. The manifold tuning valve and short runner valves are controlled by an onboard electronic controller responsive to signals from the engine corresponding to parameters such as engine speed. The short runner valves are connected to a short runner valve shaft, and a biasing assembly applies a load to selected journal locations for the shaft to reduce oscillations of the shaft and the potentially resulting chatter. Further and endplay control assembly limits total endplay to non-uniform expansion or contraction between the plastic manifold and the metal short runner valve shaft and short runner valves.
