A method of controlling deposition of material from at least one plasma transferred wire arc (PTWA) torch within at least one bore includes: directing a fluid through a duct; and directing the fluid through a number of cannons N disposed adjacent and downstream from the duct. The fluid is directed through the duct and N cannons and past the PTWA torch while the PTWA torch is spraying downstream from N−1 cannons.

Precision air flow routing devices and method for thermal spray coating

A thread tap includes a shaft and teeth. The shaft includes helical passages from the threading end to the base end of the shaft. Each passage opens through an aperture in the threading end. A second tap includes a cap and the shaft includes an axially extending passage. The cap is coupled to the threading end and at least partially defines apertures in fluid communication with the passage and the exterior of the tap. A third tap includes teeth spaced apart by a plurality of linear flutes. The shaft includes a central passage and a plurality of flute passages. Each flute passage extends radially outward from a common location in the central passage to a corresponding one of the flutes. The central passage is closed to a terminal end of the threading end.

A milling method includes moving a milling tool having at least two axially spaced apart sets of cutting inserts to an axial position within a bore in a material and rotating the milling tool about a longitudinal axis. The method further includes initiating contact between the milling tool and a wall of the bore in a region of the wall having a least amount of material at the axial position. The method further includes moving the milling tool around a perimeter of the bore.

Interpolated milling methods

An apparatus for controlling deposition of material from a plasma transferred wire arc (PTWA) torch within a bore is provided. The apparatus includes a duct and a plurality of cannons. The duct includes a plurality of fluid passageways separated by cross-members. The plurality of cannons are disposed adjacent and downstream from the plurality of fluid passageways of the duct. The flow of fluid is simultaneously directed through all of the fluid passageways and the plurality of cannons and past the PTWA torch in the bore.

Precision air flow routing devices and method for thermal spray coating applications

Milling tools and methods are disclosed. The method may include moving a milling tool having at least two axially spaced apart sets of cutting inserts to an axial position within a bore in a material and rotating the milling tool about a longitudinal axis. Contact between the milling tool and a wall of the bore may be initiated in a region of the wall having a least amount of material at the axial position. The milling tool may include a tool shaft having a longitudinal axis, a first set of radially spaced cutting inserts coupled to the tool shaft, and a directly adjacent second set of radially spaced cutting inserts coupled to the tool shaft and spaced from the first set of cutting inserts along the longitudinal axis. The first and second sets of cutting inserts may be staggered from each other by at least 10 degrees.

A workpiece fixture assembly is provided herein. The workpiece fixture assembly includes a baseplate including an engagement surface. First and second static risers are configured to maintain a position of a workpiece. The first static riser includes a first gage bore thereon. A dynamic riser is configured to abut the workpiece and has a second gage bore thereon. A numerical control machine has a probe to measure an offset distance between the first and second gage bores. A linearly actuable workpiece support is disposed on the baseplate.

Workpiece holding fixture for machining multiple prismatic parts

A method of manufacturing a transmission case housing is provided wherein a minimum quantity of lubrication as a compressed air/oil mist is supplied as the housing is rough bored and face milled. The transmission case defines a plurality of transmission fluid drainage holes for draining transmission fluid from the transmission when installed in a vehicle. The housing is positioned with the fluid drainage holes below a central axis of the housing and a plurality of internal bores and faces are bored and face milled on the housing. The compressed air/oil mist is sprayed from the cutting head to cool and lubricate the boring and face milling tools. Machining chips are blown off the rough bored housing through the fluid drainage holes.

Method and apparatus for manufacturing a transmission case

A workpiece holding fixture including a base plate having an engagement surface including a travel slot. A first static riser includes a position control member configured to removably couple a workpiece to the first static riser. A second static riser includes a rotation control member and is configured to removably couple the workpiece to the second static riser. A dynamic riser is configured to abut the workpiece by automatic, semi-automatic, or manual movement into secure engagement with the workpiece. The dynamic riser is slidably coupled with the travel slot and is operable between a plurality of positions associated with workpiece variants having different locating features and geometries.

A method for forming a valve includes forming a valve body; machining a bore by passing a tool having cutting edges along an axis into the valve body; machining a groove and face in the bore at axially spaced locations by revolving the tool about a circular circumference whose center is aligned with the bore; and supplying lubricant in a pneumatic stream through the tool to the cutting edges.

An apparatus and method which utilize electrical discharge machining equipment and techniques to prepare an electrically conductive surface for thermal spray coating or for other purposes. The apparatus includes one or more electrodes, with each electrode having a working face, defining a plane. The one or more electrodes are mounted on the leading end of a shaft and can form part of an electrode assembly. The shaft is at least moveable axially by a shaft actuating mechanism and, in some applications, may also rotate the shaft. Each electrode is moveable by a gap setting mechanism in response to and in a direction different than the axial movement of the shaft to form a voltage gap between each working face and the surface being prepared. A supply of dielectric fluid is disposable in the voltage gap. An electrical discharge circuit conducts an electric current through the dielectric fluid in the gap to produce a gap voltage. The shaft actuating mechanism is controlled by a gap voltage control system. An aligning mechanism can be used to maintain each working face in a substantially parallel relation with it corresponding electrically conductive surface. A flexible coupling mechanism can be used to allow the electrodes to move in a plane perpendicular to the shaft.

An apparatus for preparing a surface of a cylinder bore by electrical discharge machining includes a rotatable spindle and at least one electrode operatively connected to a power source and rotatably supported upon the spindle, the electrode being movable radially relative to the surface of the cylinder bore between a first retracted position such that the electrode is positioned within the cylinder bore prior to preparing the surface and at a second position spaced from the first position wherein the electrode is adjacent the surface of the cylinder bore for preparing the surface by electrical discharge machining as the electrode rotates with the spindle.

Apparatus for preparing a surface of a cylinder bore by electrical

A fast hole drilling EDM electrode and a more efficient apparatus and method for electrical discharge machining using the electrode. The electrode has an electrically conductive body with a leading end or tip and a length of relatively uniform non-circular cross-section that is operatively adapted to provide a dielectric flush path between the electrode body and the hole being machined in the workpiece. At least one dielectric supply bore is formed lengthwise through the body. The one or more supply bores connect a dielectric exit at the leading end of the body with a dielectric entrance located distally therefrom. This electrode is operatively adapted for being rotated during the machining process and for its non-circular cross-section to form a hole with a circular cross-section, when so rotated. During machining, a suitable dielectric fluid is supplied to the dielectric entrance of the electrode under sufficient pressure to force the dielectric through the one or more supply bores and out the dielectric exit to flush the eroded material through the dielectric flush path and out of the hole being drilled. With the present invention, a hole in a workpiece can be machined at faster rates, while still maintaining the surface quality and dimensional precision expected from an EDM apparatus and method.
