A wireless communication system and method includes antenna arrays at both the transmitter and receiver having a plurality of elements for very high data rate communication. Phased array antennas or directive fixed beam antennas are used with a beamwidth in azimuth and elevation less than 30&#xb0; to increase the power margin and to decrease the delay spread of signals at the receiver to permit wireless data communications at high data rates in closed environments, for example, bursty transmissions and isochronous communications. The wireless communication system is capable of data transmission rates which exceed 1 Gbps with propagation losses of up to at least 60 dB relative to one meter.

Wireless indoor communications using antenna arrays

A method of wireless communication is disclosed, in which polarization diversity can be utilized to improve fading performance or to increase the capacity of the communication channel in a scattering environment. Complementary signal information is impressed upon, or derived from, corresponding electric and magnetic polarized field components of a transmitted or intercepted electromagnetic wave. Four, five, or even six independent signal channels can thereby be utilized for communication using a localized antenna arrangement.

A CDMA communication system is disclosed offering a near continuum of data rates up to a maximum rate. The disclosed CDMA communication system increases the data rate variability, without disturbing the orthogonality between users. An increased number of data rates is obtained by time multiplexing the data rates achievable with conventional CDMA systems to provide additional data rates for various multimedia applications. If a user is assigned a specific orthogonal code sequence, such as a Walsh sequence, which permits a maximum data rate, nR, with conventional systems, the user can obtain additional desired data rates up to the maximum rate nR, by time multiplexing the specific orthogonal code set. Desired bit rates are achievable for applications requiring bit rates that are not an integer multiple of the rates provided by conventional techniques. A fundamental rate of R or &ldquo;fat pipe&rdquo; rates of powers-of-two multiples of the fundamental rate can be achieved in a conventional manner. A desired rate up to the maximum &ldquo;fat pipe&rdquo; rate is achieved by time multiplexing the codes w to achieve rates between R and nR, where w , denotes the first nth of the spread spectrum code w . The transmitter of the present invention achieves a rate conversion to match the appropriate codeword to the appropriate data rate, by employing buffering and reclocking of the data, with time multiplexing of the orthogonal Walsh codes corresponding to the available lower and upper rates. The rate conversion must be synchronized with the selection of the orthogonal Walsh code (corresponding to the lower and upper rates).

Method and apparatus for achieving data rate variability in orthogonal spread spectrum communication systems

Disclosed is a multiple-beam transmitting system for use in a wireless telecommunication system, including a radio transmitter assembly, which can be situated at the bottom of a base station tower, and a transmitter subassembly that can be situated atop the base station tower. The radio transmitter assembly is operative to modulate and frequency translate a plurality of input information-bearing signals. The signals are then combined to form a first FDM signal, which can then be routed to the transmitter subassembly via a single FDM cable running up the tower. The transmitter subassembly includes a power splitter for splitting the first FDM signal into a plurality of second FDM signals and a plurality of frequency translators, each for frequency translating one of the second FDM signals. Each frequency translator thereby places at least one of the information-bearing signals within a predetermined translated frequency band. A multiple-beam-antenna radiates a plurality of antenna beams, with each antenna beam transmitting at least one of the information-bearing signals placed by an associated frequency translator within the translated frequency band. A multiple beam receiving system can be employed to receive incoming signals from wireless terminals.

The present invention relates to an antenna system utilizing a power sharing network to facilitate linear operation of power amplifiers by equally distributing an electromagnetic communication signal to the plurality of power amplifiers provided in the antenna system of the present invention. The power sharing network configuration enables linear power amplifier sharing with an input signal. In particular, the present invention antenna system provides a circuit arrangement providing a greater number of linear power amplifiers relative to antenna elements provided.

A wireless transmitter and receiver are used in a wireless telecommunication system and method including antennas having at least one antenna element with a relatively narrow beamwidth at both the transmitter and receiver for high data rate communication. The antenna element provides beam coverage in both azimuthal and elevational directions, and a processor is operatively connected to the antenna and is capable of determining a suitable communication path with respect to the at least one antenna element and predetermined communications conditions.

The present invention provides a wireless communication system which employs Butler matrix combiners and circuit switching at transmitter and receiver antenna arrays to provide directive beamwidth capabilities. Such narrow beamwidths permit the communication system to determine and select the transmission path having an optimum signal quality. The antenna arrays are integrated in a multilayer construction which reduces power consumption, increases the coverage range, improves the efficiency of the antenna array, and which has lower fabrication costs.

Directive beam selectivity for high speed wireless communication networks

An intermodulation distortion (IMD) detection system improves IMD reduction capability of power shared linear amplifier networks. In one embodiment, first and second power sharing networks, preferably Butler Matrices, are provided with a plurality of linear amplifier circuits coupled therebetween. A plurality of input signals are applied to respective input ports of the first power sharing network, with a portion of each input signal amplified by each amplifier circuit and then recombined in the second power sharing network so that each amplified input signal appears at only one output port of the second power sharing network. An antenna coupled to each of these output ports then radiates the amplified signal energy associated with one of the input signals. A test signal, which may be a dual tone signal, is applied to another input port of the first power sharing network, where it is split and amplified by each amplifier circuit. Each amplifier circuit includes detection circuitry for detecting IMD energy of the test signal produced in the amplifier, which is also indicative of the IMD energy generated due to the amplification of the input signals. The amplified test signal is then recombined by the second power sharing network so that it appears only at one output port, where it is terminated.

Intermodulation distortion detection in a power shared amplifier network

Disclosed is a low distortion amplifier circuit of the predistortion type that employs a cuber circuit in the predistortion path to provide optimized signal energy at third order intermodulation frequencies, which cancels IMD products generated by the main power amplifier. The cuber circuit employs a pair of anti-parallel diodes that are biased with at least one D.C. source to produce a D.C. current flow through each diode. The input signal applied to the cuber circuit produces signal current flow in each diode to enable a third order output current to be extracted. A desired amount of third order power is thereby provided to realize minimal IMD power in the main amplifier output over a wide dynamic range of the input signal. Using a circuit analysis based on a power series approach, circuit parameters of the cuber circuit can be optimized to provide a desired amount of cancellation of third order IMD products in the main amplifier, without generating excessive higher order power, over an optimized dynamic range of the input signal.

Low distortion amplifier

Transmission capacity of an optical fiber is increased by transmitting two optical signals of orthogonal polarizations through the fiber and distinguishing the signals from one another at the receiver by appropriately weighting polarization components representative of the transmitted signals. The weighted polarization components are summed to provide two output electrical signals that are proportional in magnitude to the two transmitted optical signals. Appropriate weighting of the signals eliminates cross-channel interference and maximizes the signal to noise ratio. Signals of arbitrary received polarizations are detected and separated from one another.

In an angle diversity receiving system, the primary and diversity signals are produced by a waveguide signal separator coupled to a single receiving antenna. The separator operates by converting selective higher order modes in the antenna into fundamental modes that will propagate in its two output waveguides. The result is a robust system that operates over a frequency band wide enough to cover both the 4 GHz and 6 GHz common carrier bands with both horizontally and vertically polarized signals, and that can use a wide variety of antennas.

The present invention relates to a switching technique for packet Frequency Division Multiplexed (FDM) communication systems. In the present system, each of N system users is assigned (a) either a separate fixed one of N transmit frequency channels or a selected free one of L transmit frequency channel for communications to a head-end FDM channel switching arrangement (IO), and (b) a fixed assigned separate one of N receive channels for communications from the head-end FDM channels switching arrangement. At the FDM channel switching means, all FDM channel signals received from the system users are directed into separate paths (21) through the switching arrangement. The signals in each path are demodulated (23) to baseband, and a destination address in each packet is detected (28) to determine where each packet is to be sent. Each path in the switching arrangement is hardwired therethrough to an associated transmitting oscillator (29) which is frequency tuned, by means of the detected destination address, to the unique frequency channel of the user or the external network which is the desired destination of the packet. Thus, switching of a packet signal is accomplished without ever connecting or disconnecting wire lines.
