A control system optimized for low-power operation includes an electronic valve controller for controlling a hydraulic valve and a control interface for receiving operating commands from a user and communicating the operating commands to the electronic valve controller. The control interface includes a multi-function single hand control with a plurality of position indicating elements for detecting actuation of the single hand control, a master enable associated with all of the position indicating elements, and a plurality of individual enable elements each associated with one of the position indicating elements. A controller directs operation of the control interface and is configured to sample a position indicating element only if the master enable is asserted and the corresponding individual enable element is asserted. Other aspects of the control system minimize power consumption, including fast sampling that allows the controller to spend more time in a low power mode.

A photoacoustic detector wherein control circuits compensate for long term variations of components therein including a light source and sensing microphones. The control circuits intermittently energize the source to evaluate changes in at least source resistance. Various video and audio streams are collected from a live event and forwarded to a central control studio. Graphics are created at the central studio on a personal computer or chyron device. These signals are then combined with special data codes into a 'digital package,' and subsequently, transmitted over a cable distribution system. Once received at a viewer home, the signals are received and processed in an interactive digital cable box. Selections of the video, audio, graphics displays and/or Web pages can be made as a function of immediate viewer entries, or to interrogatory responses presented at the beginning or during the program, or based on a prestored viewer profile. Once a decision is made to switch from one video to another video option, the digital switch is performed seamlessly. The digital interactive system is based upon seamless branches which occur in the course of full-motion video.

In one of several embodiments, a method of communicating optical signals comprises communicating a plurality of optical signals over an optical communications medium, wherein each of at least some of the plurality of optical signals comprises a launch power that is a function of a noise property measured at or near a center wavelength of that signal. Launch powers of the plurality of optical signals primarily decrease with increasing center wavelengths of the plurality of optical signals.

A Raman amplifier includes a Raman gain fiber comprising a length of high-dispersion gain fiber and operable to receive at least one optical signal. The Raman amplifier also includes at least one pump source capable of generating at least one pump signal that co-propagates within the Raman gain fiber with at least a portion of the at least one optical signal received by the Raman gain fiber. The length of the high-dispersion gain fiber is at least ten (10) times a walk off length between the at least one pump signal and at least one wavelength of the at least one optical signal received by the Raman gain fiber. In addition, the length of high-dispersion gain fiber is at least two (2) times a walk off length between at least two optical signal wavelengths of the at least one optical signal received by the Raman gain fiber.

Co-propagating Raman amplifiers

A laser diode pump includes a plurality of laser diodes each capable of generating a lasing wavelength. The laser diode pump further includes at least one wavelength combiner operable to combine the plurality of lasing wavelengths generated by the plurality of laser diodes into a multiple wavelength pump signal. In one particular embodiment, at least two of the plurality of lasing wavelengths generated by the plurality of laser diodes comprise a wavelength between 1270 nm and 1350 nm.

A Raman amplifier apparatus includes an optical transmission line with an input to receive an optical signal, an output that passes the optical signal, a first Raman gain fiber and a second Raman gain fiber. A first WDM is positioned between the second Raman gain fiber and the output. A first set of pump wavelengths is input to the first WDM. A second WDM is positioned between the first and second Raman gain fibers. A second set of pump wavelengths is input to the second WDM. At least a portion of the first set of pump wavelengths are different than the second set of pump wavelengths. The first and second set of pump wavelengths propagate in the same direction.

In one embodiment, an optical amplifier includes a gain medium operable to receive a plurality of signals each having a center wavelength and a noise figure associated with at least a portion of the amplifier and varying as a function of wavelength. At least two of the plurality of signals have launch powers that are a function of a magnitude of the noise figure measured at or near the center wavelength of that signal.

A Raman amplifier assembly includes a Raman amplifier configured to receive a signal from a signal source. The signal travels in an upstream direction in the Raman amplifier. A first pump source is coupled to the Raman amplifier. The first pump source produces a first pump beam that travels in a downstream direction and is counter-propagating relative to the signal. A second pump source is coupled to the Raman amplifier and produces a second pump beam that travels in the upstream direction. The second pump source has an average relative intensity noise of less than &minus;80 dB/Hz.

Low-noise distributed Raman amplifier using bi-directional pumping using multiple Raman orders

An amplifier apparatus includes an optical transmission line with a Raman amplification region that provides a pump to signal power conversion efficiency of at least 20%. The Raman amplification region is configured to amplify a signal with multiple wavelengths over at least a 30 nm range of wavelengths. A pump source is coupled to the optical transmission line. An input optical signal is amplified in the Raman amplification region and an output signal is generated that has at least 100 mW more power than the input optical signal.

High efficiency raman amplifier

One aspect of the invention includes an optical amplifier operable to amplify a plurality of optical wavelength signals at least in part through Raman amplification. The amplifier includes an input operable to receive a plurality of wavelength signals and an output operable to communicate an amplified version of at least some of the plurality of wavelength signals. The amplifier further includes a pump assembly operable to generate one or more pump signals and a gain medium operable to receive the plurality of wavelength signals and the one or more pump signals and to facilitate amplification of at least some of the plurality of wavelength signals. The amplifier has associated with it a noise figure having a shape varying as a function of wavelength. At least one of the one or more pump signals is operable to have its power varied to selectively control the shape of the noise figure.
