Job tickets with banner descriptions and document descriptions are automatically generated by a print shop's DMS. The banner descriptions and the document descriptions are composed of PDL instructions. Document descriptions can be managed and altered without necessarily affecting the job ticket. The banner page PDL instructions are specially designated so that banner pages cannot be managed without also managing the job ticket. Preserving the banner page within a job ticket prevents unwanted side effects from disturbing the print shop's work flow.

A book production method and system are disclosed. The method of book production allows an operator to input preferences for a multi-part workflow. The book covers can be identified using, for example, a scanner. A book block can then be retrieved from a book repository based on the identified cover. After performing raster image processing (RIP) of the book block, copies of the book block can be printed. Finishing can be accomplished by binding the printed book blocks to the book covers using an in-line binder or off-line binder.

Disclosed are systems and methods for compiling a set of images into a single document image file having a version key and a color plane associated therewith. The version key is employed in association with the images and color planes to cause a raster image processor to select, or ignore, color planes and thereby enable printing of a plurality of multi-versioned documents from a common image file set.
