The barrier properties of a water soluble gas barrier material are improved if the material is blended with a nanoparticle calcium carbonate having a size of from 10 to 250 nanometers. The barrier material is on a substrate to provide a substrate with gas barrier properties. A layer of heat sealable material may be applied to the exposed surface of the barrier material. A method for making the barrier coated substrate is disclosed.

A high-yield paper sheet generally includes at least about 50 weight percent mechanical pulp, wherein the basis weight of the sheet is in the range of about 24 to about 60 pounds, and wherein the porosity of the sheet is in the range of about 40 to about 100 Sheffield porosity.

Method of making a barrier material

A polyethylene glycol-containing paper is described. The paper includes polyethylene glycol (PEG) having an average molar mass in the range of from about 30,000 to about 50,000. In one embodiment, polyethylene glycol is incorporated into the paper during the paper's formation. In another embodiment, a polyethylene glycol-coated paper is provided. Methods for forming polyethylene glycol-containing papers are also described.
