Support plates for packing materials in mass transfer towers made using parallel beams with generally inverted U-shaped cross-sections which contact one another along a line running the length of the beams, are provided with a trough member supported directly under the contact line between adjacent beams.

Support plate

Metal strips are provided which can be bent into the shape of cylindrical packing elements of the Lessing or Pall ring type. These strips have one end bent back at an acute angle to the rest of the strip and have slots cut into the strip in the vicinity of the bend. At the opposed end tabs are provided that engage with the slots when the strip is formed into a cylinder so as to hold the ends together. Such packing elements have a much greater resistance to crushing than conventional elements and can be made of much thinner metal.

Packing element

A new heat sink composition having relatively high volumetric heat capacity and relatively high density have been prepared. The compositions comprise a set of formulas including: a) 50-95% oxide of iron and 50-5% of a mixture of clay, an organic binder or an inorganic binder, where said mixture can contain any portion of clay, organic binder or inorganic binder in any proportions provided the mixture adheres to the 50-5% compositional range; b) 15-95% oxide of iron and 85-5% of clay; c) 15-85% oxide of iron, 10-2% of a transition metal oxide other than iron and 75-13% inorganic binder; and d) 50-80% oxide of iron, 15-5% of talc and 35-15% clay. The compositions show good dried and fired properties and can even be loaded and fired in-situ because they possess good dried crush strength.

Heat sink formulation

A non-welded plate for supporting packing materials or limiting the upward movement of such packing materials in a packed column of a gas and liquid contacting apparatus is comprised of a plurality of first and second support beams. The first support beams have means for fastening to internal support members of the apparatus affixed thereon. The first and second support beams are essentially perpendicular to each other and are attached together by retaining means, such as a pin. Voids between the support beams may be covered with screen to provide further support or limitation.

Existing fractional distillation columns, especially those in extensive commercial use for separating the lower molecular weight hydrocarbons, are often limited in the quality of separation achievable by the heat-absorbing capacity of and/or the minimum operating temperature of their associated refrigeration equipment. The separation efficiency of such equipment can be improved by introducing an auxiliary material into the equipment to provide additional reflux volume without the need for added refrigeration capacity. The auxiliary material must be less volatile than the primary constituent(s) of the off-gas from the column, and it advantageously should also be less volatile than the majority of the bottoms stream from the column, in order to facilitate later separation.
