A system for electrostatic application of conductive coating liquid has a grounded primary supply of conductive coating liquid, an electrostatic spray device and a system for delivering coating liquid from the primary supply to the spray device while maintaining a high voltage at the spray device electrically isolated from the primary supply. The delivery system includes one or more electrical insulation devices, each of which has a cylinder comprising an insulative conduit having a liquid inlet and a liquid outlet. The cylinders of the electrical insulation devices are connected via their inlets and outlets between the primary supply and the spray device to deliver coating liquid from the primary supply to the spray device. Each electrical insulation device has within its cylinder a piston that is movable between the inlet to and the outlet from the cylinder to move coating liquid out of the cylinder while scraping the inside wall of the cylinder free of coating liquid, so that the cylinder becomes substantially electrically insulating between its inlet and outlet.

A system for coupling a grounded color changer to an electrostatic coating material sprayer electrically isolates the color changer from a high voltage at the sprayer. The system has a fluid path extending from the color changer to the sprayer and a reservoir is coupled to the fluid path at a connection point intermediate the color changer and sprayer. To fill the system with coating material to be sprayed, the fluid path to the sprayer is first filled with coating material from the color changer, following which the remaining coating material to be sprayed during the coating operation is flowed from the connection point into the reservoir. At least a portion of the fluid path between the connection point and the color changer is then cleaned of coating material to electrically isolate the reservoir and the sprayer from the color changer. Coating material is then delivered from the reservoir to the sprayer for being subjected to a high voltage and emitted in an electrostatically charged atomized spray. At the end of spraying, the high voltage is removed from the sprayer, and the reservoir, fluid path and sprayer are cleaned of coating material of the color just sprayed and reloaded with the next color of coating material to be sprayed.

An electrostatic spray coating system has a reservoir into which a metered quantity of electrically conductive paint is flowed from a grounded color changer and through a first flow meter. After filling the reservoir, at least a portion of the flow path between the reservoir and the color changer is cleaned of paint to electrically isolate the reservoir and paint therein from the color changer. The paint in the reservoir is then flowed through a second flow meter to an electrostatic spray gun. The second flow meter is electrically isolated from ground and is used to compare the quantity of paint delivered to the spray gun to the quantity of paint loaded into the reservoir, as well as to monitor and control the volume flow rate of paint from the reservoir to the spray gun. The arrangement makes it possible to spray substantially all of the paint flowed into the reservoir and to accurately control the flow rate of paint to the spray gun.

Color change systems for electrostatic coating apparatus are characterized by a dielectric manifold in-line between supplies of different colors of coating materials and a material supply line to the apparatus. To initiate a coating operation, a selected color of material is provided through the manifold to fill the supply line, whereafter the manifold is flushed clean of the material. A high electrostatic charging voltage is then applied to the coating apparatus while the material in the line is supplied to the apparatus for being electrostatically charged and emitted by the apparatus to coat an article. For conductive coating materials, during the coating operation the high charging voltage conducted through the material in the hose is blocked by the nonconductive dielectric manifold and cannot reach and charge the material supplies, so there is no need for a protective enclosure around the supplies of leakage of charging current to the supplies. In one embodiment the color change system is manually operable, and in another it is automatically operable.

Color change systems for electrostatic spray coating apparatus

Apparatus for coupling a grounded color changer and associated supplies of conductive paint to an electrostatic paint sprayer isolates the color changer and paint supplies from a high voltage at the sprayer. The apparatus has at least one reservoir into which a metered volume of one color of paint to be sprayed is introduced while the reservoir and its contents are grounded. After charging the reservoir with paint and prior to supply of the paint to the sprayer, fluid lines between the reservoir and color changer are flushed to electrically isolate the reservoir and paint therein from the color changer and paint supplies. The reservoir and paint therein are then ungrounded and the paint is delivered to the sprayer for being emitted in an electrostatically charged atomized spray. At the end of spraying, the high voltage is removed from the sprayer and the reservoir and its contents are again grounded, following which the reservoir is purged of paint of the one color and reloaded with paint of another color. Advantageously, the apparatus has two reservoirs for alternately receiving and delivering selected colors of paint to the sprayer, so that one may be cleaned and reloaded with paint while the other delivers paint to the sprayer.

Method of and apparatus for electrical isolation of electrostatic

A method for hand forming cooking utensils, a portion of the formed utensil being disposable. A wire frame is bent to define the shape, in plan view, of the desired cooking utensil. To form a two-dimensional cooking utensil, a foil means is wrappingly secured to the wire frame. To form a three-dimensional cooking utensil, the wire means is first deformed to conform to the perimetrical configuration of a mold means which is preferably a staple item of commerce such as a mayonnaise jar or a number 10 can. After removing the wire member from its surrounding engagement with the mold member, a foil means is manually made to conform to the shape of the mold means. The wire member is re-positioned about the perimeter of the mold means, spaced downwardly from the upstanding free end of the mold means, assuming such mold means is supported on one of its ends by a support surface, a predetermined distance equal to the depth of the desired cooking utensil. Securing the foil means about the periphery of the wire frame by reversely folding the foil and crimping the same provides the desired utensil when the frame and mold are separated. Handle means are integrally formed with the mold encircling-portion of the wire frame.
