2-(2-Hydroxy-3-phenoxypropylamino)ethylphenoxyacetamide compounds are disclosed as useful in the treatment of obesity and related conditions. Processes for their preparation are described, as are novel intermediates and pharmaceutical compositions containing them.

A process for the manufacture of p-hydroxybenzyl cyanide which comprises reacting p-hydroxymandelic acid with cyanide ion. The product is a useful intermediate for the preparation of the .beta.-adrenergic blocking agent atenolol.

Cinnolin-3-yl carboxylic acids and esters, amides and like derivatives, processes for the preparation of these compounds, and pharmaceutical compositions comprising any one of these compounds. A representative compound is ethyl 6-ethylcinnolin-3-yl carboxylate. The compounds are active as inhibitors of effects following the combination of reagin-like antibodies and their antigens.
