The friability of green needle coke is reduced by heating the green needle coke to a temperature between about 875.degree. F. and about 1,200.degree. F. for a time sufficient to reduce the friability of the green needle coke.

Method for producing needle coke

A solution useful in making a carbon-metal phosphate composite comprising a carbon body having a glassy metal metaphosphate distributed therethrough and coating the surface thereof is claimed. The solution comprises a nonionic organophosphorus ester and a metal salt dissolved therein.

A method is provided for producing needle coke comprising the steps of heating green needle coke at temperatures between about 935.degree. F. and about 1,100.degree. F. for between about 10 minutes and about 24 hours, cooling the coke to below about 250.degree. F., and calcining the coke at calcination temperatures above about 2,000.degree. F.

A method is provided for producing needle coke comprising the steps of heating green needle coke at temperatures between about 875.degree. F. and about 1,200.degree. F. for between about 10 minutes and about 24 hours, and, without first allowing the temperature of the coke to cool below about 250.degree. F., calcining the green needle coke at calcination temperatures above about 2,000.degree. F.

A carbon-metal phosphate composite comprises a carbon body having a glassy metal metaphosphate distributed therethrough and coating the surface thereof, wherein said metal metaphosphate is a product of the reaction between a metal salt and a nonionic organophosphorus ester. The composite is characterized by an improved resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures and a decreased coefficient of friction as compared to carbon bodies. The composite is made by contacting a carbon body, having an external surface and an internal surface provided by an open network of connecting pores, with a solution comprising a nonionic organophosphorus ester and a metal salt to coat both the internal and external surface thereof, curing said coated carbon body to react said organophosphorus ester with said metal salt to provide a metal-organophosphorus salt, calcining said cured carbon body to decompose said metal-organophosphorus salt to provide a metal metaphosphate and recovering a carbon composite having said metal metaphosphate uniformly distributed therethrough and continuously coated on the surface thereof.
