Phosphorus-based coatings having a plurality of phosphate moieties, a plurality of phosphonate moieties, or both, covalently bonded to an oxide surface of an implantable substrate exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics: (a) the surface phosphorus-containing group density of the coated regions of the substrate is at least about 0.1 nmol/cm; (b) the phosphorus-based coating has a thickness of less than about 10 nm; or (c) the surface phosphorus-containing group density of the coated regions of the substrate is equal to or greater than the surface hydroxyl group density of the oxide surface of the substrate. Implantable devices embodying the coated substrates are also disclosed.

Devices with multiple surface functionality

The present invention provides a dense-coverage, adherent phosphorous-based coating on the native oxide surface of a material. Disclosed phosphorous-based coatings include phosphate and organo-phosphonate coatings. The present invention also provides further derivatization of the phosphorous-based coatings to yield dense surface coverage of chemically reactive coatings and osetoblast adhesion-promoting and proliferation-promoting coatings on the native oxide surface of a titanium material.

Enhanced bonding layers on titanium materials

The present invention provides a dense-coverage, adherent phosphorous-based coating on the native oxide surface of a material. Disclosed phosphorous-based coatings include phosphate and organo-phosphonate coatings. The present invention also provides further derivatization of the phosphorous-based coatings to yield dense surface coverage of chemically reactive coatings and osteoblast adhesion-promoting and proliferation-promoting coatings on the native oxide surface of a titanium material.

Process for forming a coated article by (a) depositing a layer of an omega functionalized organophosphorous compound on an oxide substrate; (b) heating the substrate of step (a) to a temperature sufficient to bond the omega functionalized organophosphorous compound to the oxide substrate; (c) depositing a separate layer onto the layer produced by step (b); and (d) bonding the layers produced by steps (b) and (c) through the omega functional group.

Enhanced bonding layers on native oxide surfaces

Carrier applied coating layers

Structures comprising substrates comprised of an organic material capable of accepting a proton from an organophosphorous compound and a film of the organophosphorous compound bonded to the substrate are disclosed. The structures are useful in a variety of applications such as visual display devices.

Thin films

An implantable device with a metal, metal alloy, metalloid, polymeric or ceramic surface and a phosphonic acid coating layer directly contacting the surface wherein the surface has hydroxyl groups covalently bonded to the acid groups of the coating layer and the phosphonate organic ligands are omega-functionalized.

The present invention provides a process for providing on the surface of a substrate an adherent phorphorous acid-based coating layer, the method comprising contacting said surface with a carrier conveying a coating composition comprising an acid selected from the group consisting of phosphoroic acids, organo-phosphoric acids, phosphonic acids, and mixtures thereof, at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient time to bond at least a portion of the acid in the compositon to the oxide surface.

Ligand-containing coating layers on the surface of hydroxide-bearing substrates comprising transition metal atoms selected from the group consisting of Group IVB, Group VB and Group VIB of the Periodic Chart covalently bonded to the surface hydroxyls of said substrate, wherein each transition metal atom is further covalently bonded to one or more ligands of said coating layer, thereby covalently bonding said coating layer to said substrate. Disclosed ligands include inorganic phosphates and organic phosphonates.
