A composition, such as a pigment dispersion or coating composition, includes a pigment and a wetting additive. The wetting additive includes a first agent and a second agent. The first agent has the following formula:X(AO)Hwherein X is a Cto Cbranched chain, A is an alkylene group selected from the group of ethylene groups, propylene groups, butylene groups, and combinations thereof, and m is from about 3 to about 20. The second agent is different from the first agent and has the following formula:Y(A'O)Hwherein Y is a Cto Clinear chain, A&#x2032; is an alkylene group selected from the group of ethylene groups, propylene groups, butylene groups, and combinations thereof, and n is at least about 3. The second agent has a triblock (A&#x2033;O)(EO)(A&#x2033;O)configuration in the portion represented by (A&#x2032;O), wherein A&#x2033; is selected from the group of propylene groups, butylene groups, and combinations thereof and wherein p, q, and r are each independently at least 1.

Wetting additive and composition including the same

A coating composition includes a latex component and an agent for replacing all or part of the volatile coalescing solvent. The agent has the following formula:X(AO)Hwherein The coating composition has a VOC content of less than or equal to 150 g/L. The agent for replacing the volatile coalescing solvent contributes little or nothing to a total VOC level in the coating composition. As such, the coating composition may be formulated to have a VOC content of less than or equal to 150 g/L, which meets or exceeds standards for VOC content in interior and exterior flat and non-flat paints for all sheen ranges, while providing equivalent or superior properties to those provided by volatile coalescing solvents.

The present invention is directed to a powder coating composition and a method. The method improves the color strength of a cured film of the powder-based coating composition. To produce the powder-based coating composition, the method begins by combining a powder-based binder, specifically a resin and a cross-linking agent, with a pigment and a surfactant to form a mixture. The mixture is then extruded thereby forming an extrudate of the mixture. The extrudate is cooled and then ground to produce the powder-based coating composition from the extrudate of the mixture. Next, the powder-based coating composition is spray applied to a substrate and cured to form the cured film. The surfactant in the mixture improves the color strength of the powder-based coating composition and the cured film so that the amount of pigment included in the mixture can ultimately be reduced. Additionally, certain physical properties of the cured film are not compromised.

Compositions of the present invention, following application to a substrate and the volatilization of the water component, form a substantially uniform polymeric film that can serve as a coating or adhesive.
