A surgical tool system including a tool unit and a first battery and control module and a second battery and control module. The tool unit includes a power generating unit and a head for supporting an energy applicator. The first battery and control module is configured to releasably receive the tool unit. The first battery and control module having a first shape so that when the tool unit is attached to the first battery and control module, the tool unit and the first battery and control module have a pencil-grip configuration. The second battery and control module is also configured to releasably receive the tool unit. The second battery and control module having a second shape so that when the tool unit is attached to the second battery and control module, the tool unit and the second battery and control module have a pistol-shaped configuration.

Surgical tool system with interchangeable battery and control modules

A battery and control module to which a powered surgical tool is releasably attached. Internal to the module there is: a cell for energizing the tool; a sensor for monitoring an operational state of the tool; a sensor for monitoring a trigger external to the module; and a control circuit. Based on the signals output by the sensors, the control circuit selectively applies energization signals from the cell to the power generating unit internal to the surgical tool. In some versions of the invention, the trigger is attached to the module.

Surgical tool system with a battery and control module having a driver capable of reusing contacts

A system and method include a battery removably coupleable to a medical device. The battery includes a cell for storing an electrical charge, a housing, a first contact, and a second contact that is inactive when the battery is not in proximity to the medical device. The battery includes a sensor for generating a proximity signal in response to a proximity of the medical device to the battery that is not based on an electrical connection of the medical device to the contacts. The battery includes a battery controller for receiving the proximity signal, and responsively causing the second contact to be activated. One of the medical device and the battery comprises a communication device. When the medical device is coupled to the battery and the second contact is activated, the communication device transmits an authentication signal to enable authentication.
