Computer systems, devices, and associated methods of optimizing the execution of instructions of a database statement by a database server are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a method includes identifying a potential execution plan for executing instructions of the database statement and estimating a cost for executing the execution plan. The cost can comprise an encrypted data processing cost associated with a operation in the execution plan of executing an operation on encrypted data in a protected computing environment. The method can include estimating the encrypted data processing cost in the protected computing environment based on statistics generated in the protected computing environment about a database table. In response to estimating the cost for executing the execution plan, comparing the cost to estimated costs of alternative execution plans, selecting the lowest-cost plan for execution, and executing the lowest-cost execution plan.

Execution optimization of database statements involving encrypted data

The resynchronization of multiple copies of a database after a divergence in transaction history in provided. In an illustrative implementation, algorithms are provided for synchronizing multiple copies of a database upon the occurrence of a divergence in transaction history. A data environment is provided having a database and a copy. The database environment operating in a manner where the database records some transactions and the copy recording some later transactions, but neither having an up-to-date set of data or log of data changes. In operation, the database and its copy compare transaction log sequence numbers to discern the changes database and/or database copy pages. During resynchronization, the database and/or its copy sends page specific information about changes that have not been performed on each other respectively. In this manner, the data environment may be resynchronized with minimal data transmitted and without a requiring a complete restoration of the database.

Resynchronization of multiple copies of a database after a divergence in transaction history

A system and method for controlling usage of a particular software program in a computer network environment is disclosed. The invention operates by controlling the throughput of the software as it executes on a server computer. In particular, the invention monitors the number of active requests to the software. If the number of active requests exceeds a predefined number, the software throughput on the server (e.g., requests completed per minute) is artificially restricted. As such, the present invention continues to allow further connections to the software but intentionally restricts further use by inhibiting the throughput for all connections to the software. Preferably, the present invention continues to allow the predefined number of active requests to be exceeded, but as more requests are made, the overall performance of software progressively degrades.

Software server usage governor

An on-line dynamic shrink facility sets an allocation fence in a file and moves data from above the fence to below the fence. The fence is based on a target size for the file. When all the data above the fence is moved below the fence, the space above the fence is freed. The target size can be a specified size, an original size for the file when it was created, or a size calculated by examining the amount of space used and adding in an amount of desired free space. Resources that are required to move the data, such as old and new allocation units for the data, or that will be impacted by movement of the data, such as index entries, are locked or latched to prevent corruption of the data while it is being moved. The operations are performed in discreet transactions which are immediately committed to minimize the impact on other users of the file.
