Disclosed is an apparatus and method for selecting wide area network resources, such as resources identified by URL values, using a rotary knob for user input. A client device having a display and a rotary knob is used for accessing network resources via a public network using an application program, such as a browser application. Rotation of the knob is detected by the client device, which adjusts the contents of a previewing window according to the rotation of the knob. The previewing window identifies graphics corresponding to predefined network resources and the graphics are output in a preview area of the display on the client device. As the user rotates the knob, the graphics for the network resources in the preview window are scrolled through the preview area of the display under control of the knob. The preview area includes a selection frame for selecting a network resource. When a graphic corresponding to a desired network resource is positioned within the selection frame, then the user depresses the knob, or other selection input device, to select the desired network resource. A network resource identifier, such as a URL value, corresponding to the desired network resource, is then sent to the browser application for processing. The browser application transmits a command, such as an HTTP command, onto the public network, receives and processes a response to the HTTP command, and displays the information from the response on the display of the client device.

Display of media previews

A method, system and program for creating an overview image display of an environment or series of images and a detail window into the overview image display. The detail window consists of a single frame of the overview image or some corresponding image to present additional detail of the selected portion of the overview image . Additional features include the ability to interactively reposition a pointer to select another detail window corresponding to another area of the overview image . Further capabilities are provided to store selective reference points as a user interactively selects the reference points and play them back at some user initiated later time. To aid the user, the interactive selections are identified by a series of area indicias left on the display.

Temporal event viewing and editing system

A method and apparatus for generating and observing a transition between a first and second sequence of information. The invention is practiced on a computer controlled display system and a computer controlled sound generation system. The method includes providing the first stream and the second stream of information to the computer system; creating a template for modifying an audio signal during a transition from the first stream of information to the second stream of information; specifying the duration of the transition and specifying at least a portion of the first stream and a portion of the second stream for the transition; creating an audio transition using the audio template for modifying an audio signal and using the portion of the first stream and the portion of second stream. Another aspect of the invention includes a method for controlling the rate of transistion from the first stream of digital information to the second stream of digital information which method includes: providing the first stream of information and second stream of information to the computer system; providing a rate transition template for specifying the rate of transition during the transistion; specifying the duration of the transistion and at least a portion of the first stream and the second stream for the transition; creating the transition using the rate template and the portions of the first and second streams, wherein the rate transition template includes a visual representation of the rate of transition over the duration of the transition.

Method and apparatus for transitioning between sequences of digital

A method and apparatus for generating and viewing a transition between a first and second sequence of images on a computer controlled display system. The method of the invention involves several steps, including: providing a first and second sequence of digitized images, which are typically stored in the computer system; providing the duration of total time of the transition between the first and second sequence of images; providing a resource means for specifying the transition between the first and second sequence; determining a first portion of the first sequence of images (the first portion having a duration in time less than or equal to the duration of the transition); determining a second portion of the second sequence (the second portion of the second sequence of images having a duration in time less than or equal to the duration of the transition); creating a transition template from the transition resource, the transition template having a duration equal to the transition; and combining the first portion of the first sequence and the second portion of the second sequence with the transition template to thereby produce a third sequence of images. The step of creating a transition template from the transition resource is further comprised of the steps of selecting objects, interpolating objects and/or a source image area and mapping objects to a source image area. In the combining step, the transition template is used to determine which portions of the first source sequence, the second source sequence, or both will be displayed in the third sequence of images. Also provided is a means for modifying a duration of the entire transition or for modifying a duration of individual frames within the transition.

Method apparatus for transitioning between sequences of images

A video editing system comprising a computer system having a mass storage and a display, a video source, such as a video cassette recorder (VCR), camera, or optical disc player, and a video processor/controller linking the computer to the video source. The computer system functions under the direction of standard operating software and video editing software which provide the user with an interface for controlling both playback and clip editing of video information from the video source. Upon initialization of the editing system, the user is presented with at least a video window for displaying the video information, a control window for regulating playback of the video information, and a clip list window having a number of rows of edit windows organized under begin, end, and clip columns. The user controls playback of video from the video source within the video window through manipulation of standard playback direction and speed indicators. To mark a video frame in the video window as either a begin or end point of a video clip, the user clicks on the desired video frame with a mouse associated with the editing system. A small digitized version of the requested video frame is then created and attached to the cursor. This small digitized frame (SDF) can then be moved in tandem with the cursor from the video window to an edit window and released. Begin and end points of clips are created by releasing an SDF within an edit window under the appropriate column. Releasing an SDF within an edit window under the clip column causes that SDF to be entered as both the begin and end point of the clip. Numerous rows of edit windows can be created in a similar manner. When the begin and end edit windows in the same row are filled with different SDFs, the video frames between those respective points are digitized and automatically inserted into the clip column for that row in an animated form. SDFs can likewise be directly manipulated to modify the content or sequence of edit windows or to change the video frame being played within the video window.

A sequential information controller for use in combination with a computer comprising a slider bar, integrating standard velocity and direction indicators, and a control icon. The user controls the playback velocity and direction of the sequential information, such as video information, on the display of the computer through an interactive user interface, which works in combination with the computer's system software. The interface includes an interactive slider bar and an interactive control icon which are depicted within an operating window of the display. The slider bar includes both playback direction/velocity indicators and control buttons. The playback of video information is primarily controlled by manipulating the image of the control icon with respect to the image of the slider bar. The image of the control icon is that of a human-like hand, which holds the slider bar image in either its open or closed hand, depending on the desired playback mode, and can be moved along the length of the slider bar image by a control device, such as a mouse, to control the playback direction and velocity of the video information on the display. When the control icon's hand is open, the control icon is spring loaded from the stop playback position of the slider bar. To keep the control icon from automatically returning to the stop playback position when the control icon's hand is open, the user must continue to hold the control icon in position with the mouse. When the control icon's hand is closed, the control icon will remain at any position along the slider bar it is placed, until moved by operation of the mouse, or until returned to the spring-loaded mode and released by the mouse, thereby allowing it to spring back to the stop position. The mode of the control icon is modulated by positioning the cursor over the control icon, selecting the control icon, and moving the cursor either up or down. Moving the cursor down, when the hand is open, closes the hand and freezes the playback velocity at the speed selected when the hand was closed. Moving the cursor up, when the hand is closed, opens the hand and spring loads the control icon. The control icon can also be rapidly moved to different positions by simply clicking on the slide bar with the mouse, regardless of the mode of operation.
