A process for producing cumene is provided which comprises the step of contacting benzene and propylene under at least partial liquid phase alkylating conditions with a particulate molecular sieve alkylation catalyst, wherein the particles of said alkylation catalyst have a surface to volume ratio of about 80 to less than 200 inch.

A catalyst composition comprises (a) a MCM-22 family molecular sieve; and (b) a binder, wherein the MCM-22 family molecular sieve is characterized by an average crystal agglomerate size of less than or equal to 16 microns. The catalyst composition may further have a second molecular sieve having a Constraint Index of less than 12, e.g., less than 2. Examples of molecular sieve useful for this disclosure are a MCM-22 family molecular sieve, zeolite Y, and zeolite Beta. The catalyst composition may be used for the process of alkylation or transalkylation of an alkylatable aromatic compound with an alkylating agent.

Aromatics alkylation

In a method for producing monoalkylated aromatic compounds, an aromatic feed is contacted with an alkylating agent in the presence of a catalyst comprising a molecular sieve having an X-ray diffraction pattern including d-spacing maxima at 12.4&#xb1;0.25, 6.9&#xb1;0.15, 3.57&#xb1;0.07, and 3.42&#xb1;0.07 Angstrom. The catalyst also contains at least one metal cation selected from Groups 1&#x2013;4 and 7&#x2013;16 of the Periodic Table of Elements, wherein the metal cation is present in an amount of at least 0.5% by weight of the catalyst, whereby selectivity of the catalyst to produce monoalkylates over polyalkylates is improved as compared with the identical catalyst but without the metal cation present.

Aromatic alkylation process

The present invention provides a process for regenerating a spent aromatics alkylation or transalkylation catalyst comprising a molecular sieve by contacting the spent catalyst with an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature of about 120 to about 600&#xb0; C. and then contacting the catalyst with an aqueous medium, such as an ammonium nitrate solution, an ammonium carbonate solution or an acid solution.

The present invention provides a process for regenerating a spent aromatics alkylation or transalkylation catalyst comprising a molecular sieve by contacting the spent catalyst with an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature of about 120 to about 600&deg; C. and then contacting the catalyst with an aqueous medium, such as an ammonium nitrate solution, an ammonium carbonate solution or an acetic acid solution.
