A surgical knife safety handle device comprises a handle body being essentially solid. A movable guard engages with the body for longitudinal movement between an extended position and a retracted position. The guard encloses a knife blade. The operation is an intuitive push/pull to extend or retract guard. The guard is formed of a clear material with a low profile that does not interfere with vision in use. The guard includes a leaf spring. The spring has a hemispherical protrusion on its underside that engages with a slot on the handle for positive engagement and an audible 'click' when it seats.

A fluid flow regulator of a smoke evacuation system for use with laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery is disclosed. The fluid flow regulator is comprised of a flow regulating means and a conduit connecting means. The flow regulating means in one embodiment includes a diaphragm and one or more orifices of predetermined diameter to provide a significant obstruction to the flow of fluid through the evacuation system. When operatively coupled to the pressurized surgical site, the fluid flow regulator makes possible the continuous evacuation of surgical smoke while simultaneously maintaining the pneumoperitoneum in a distended position for the duration of the laparoscopic procedure. Also disclosed is a method of using the fluid flow regulator to continually evacuate surgical smoke in the course of laparoscopic and endoscopic surgical procedures without deflating the pneumoperitoneum, which hereto for has been used by prior art systems to evacuate surgical smoke.

Fluid flow regulator for a smoke evacuation system and method of using same

A cassette for collection of fluids in a fluid aspirating system which may be reusable after sterilization. The cassette includes vacuum aperture and an aspiration port along the top wall of the cassette. Aspiration tubing is connected to the aspiration port at one end and is seated within an upstanding retainer at the proximal edge of the top wall at the opposite end. Internally, the cassette includes structures to increase flow impedance so that liquid is not drawn into the vacuum port when the fluid level rises. In addition, a pivot mechanism is disposed about a pivot hub within the chamber. A float is disposed on the pivot mechanism at a radius from the pivot hub for intercepting the vacuum port as aspirated fluid fills the chamber. As the fluid level rises, a light path is intercepted by the float to terminate aspiration. However, the float also mates with the vacuum port to close off the flow path. Thus, the system prevents overfilling of the container if the optical detector fails. So that filling of the cassette can be anticipated, a float space containing a second float is located along the proximal edge of the cassette. Finally, the bottom wall section includes a sterilization port which allows a cleaning system to inject a presterilizing fluid through the interior of the cassette to thereby cleanse all parts of the unit.

A fiberscope is constructed with one or more of a pivoted eyepiece, a cannula insertion assembly capable of housing a retractable fiber bundle and/or delivering distention fluid, a disposable sheath and seal assembly and an encasement for a fiber bundle. The distal end of the encased bundle can be advanced or withdrawn from its protective sheath. When advanced, it may be reoriented in direction by means of linkage to structure which can be manipulated from outside the instrument.

Apparatus and method for endoscopic diagnostics and therapy

A low-friction, abrasion-resistant, non-shedding glass fiber light guide and its method of construction. The light guide is particularly suited for endoscopic use in conjunction with other elements which may contact the light guide but must not either damage the guide or be damaged by it. The light guide comprises an elongated bundle of generally parallel glass fibers embedded in a hardened resin matrix, the bundle being ensheathed by a pair of thin protective layers disposed on opposite sides thereof, converging along a pair of side edges, and secured in place by the resinous matrix material. The method for making the light guide involves the steps of lining a mold cavity with a thin film, introducing the glass fibers and a hardenable liquid potting compound into the cavity, covering the exposed fibers and compound with a second film, rearranging the fibers and compound to establish the desired cross-sectional configuration, and then heating the mold and its contents until the resin is cured. In the disclosed embodiment, the desired cross-sectional configuration is of crescent shape. The light guide is also disclosed in combination with other coacting elements of an endoscope assembly.

An improved surgical instrument having a sheath, a grasping and/or cutting jaw assembly at one end of the sheath, a housing at the sheath's opposite end, and a plunger slidably supported by the housing and connected to the jaw assembly by means of an actuator rod extending through the sheath. The housing and plunger portions of the instrument are adapted to be coupled to a handle unit, if desired, for manipulation of the instrument and operation of the jaw assembly. The structure and method for facilitating quick removal and replacement of the jaw assembly and actuator rod are disclosed.
